Excellent choice with great actors to boot.

James Cagney, Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, Ward Bond, Ken Curtis, Nick Adams and William Powell.

My brother, in the Marines at the time it came out, would come home and quote the hell out of this movie so I had to watch it.

One of my favorites of all time.

Ernie Kovac's final movie should be mentioned in this genre:

No Time for Sergeants. It made Andy Griffith a star.

As a submariner

Movies Intended to be Comedies

Operation Petticoat - The thing I liked about this movie is it can stay pretty close to home, being released close enough to WWII that the general public was still pretty much up to speed on military matters.

Down Periscope.

Not Intended to be a Comedy

Crimson Tide - absolutely hysterical if you know the subject matter. The mutiny would have happened by the time the opening credits were over.

I left a lot of meat on the bone in my OP for others to add material but I can't believe I left this off my list. This was piss in your pants funny!

TV shows:
MASH
Hogan's Heroes - would have been a great series finale but they really didn't do that back then.

Wow, Space Force looks bad. Long trailer and not one funny joke. My list Dr. Strangelove, MASH, Three Kings.

Down Periscope was good, but the first half of Stripes was GOAT potential. The back half was still great, but just not as good.
