quote:

Cinema Paradiso is a must see.

was the first thing to pop in my head when reading the thread title. This is outstanding cinema.

There are many great ones listed here already, so I'll just add to the list:

City of Lost Children
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Seventh Seal
Thesis
Open Your Eyes (was what Vanilla Sky remade, and this is far Superior. Same director as Thesis, which is one of the most intense movies you'll ever see)

The Intouchables

Great movie with lots of comedy and drama. They remade it with Cranston and Kevin Hart, but I don't think you can copy the great chemistry from this original.

The Passion of Joan of Arc - one of the greatest performances of all time and a pure cinema masterpiece.

Belle de Jour - one of the best performances by the beautiful, talented Catherine Deneuve.

Diabolique - the film Hitchcock missed out on, also inspired him to make Psycho.

The Wages of Fear - a thriller that will have your adrenaline pumping. Tension on another level.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God - Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski create a film of beauty, passion, and madness.

I Saw the Devil - a truly disturbing film of pure horror. This one stays with you long after it ends.

Breathless - Jean-Luc Godard’s noir inspired crime drama. One of the best films ever made.

Stalker - bizarre, Russian sci-fi film. Bewildering and intriguing.

a few goodies I didn't see mentioned

Pulse (2001) - my vote for the most frightening horror film ever made

Army of Shadows (1969) - French wwii resistance film

Stalker (1979) - Weirdo Russian sci-fi

M (1931) - early sound mystery

Kanal (1957) - claustrophobic Polish war film

Woman in the Dunes (1964) - Bugfrick Japanese psychological thriller

Drug War (2013) - Hong Kong cops and criminals action thriller. One of the most impeccably constructed crime movies ever made
