I've always wondered what it must have felt like for people to see Star Wars for the first time, or the Fellowship of the Ring, not knowing they were about to begin one of the greatest film trilogies of all time. (unfortunately I'm too young and missed both.)

Now I know.

I don't know if this will end up being a trilogy or not, but the first half of that movie is one of the greatest hour and a half I've ever seen in a theater.

Plz let the rest of the story be good.

I doubt they green light the sequels.
And I loved this new Dune

Villeneuve built a solid reality by mixing real world tech and jargon with the Herbert alien magic and mysticism. He dialed back the weirdness to the perfect level. Most directors would overdo it.

great point. Watching this, having seen Lynch's movie recently (and several times), ... I could follow the plot. I could practically recite lines of script. There's really nothing NEW;
but it's just SO much better.

I would say effects, but only a couple of times, honestly. It's just made so much more... professionally, I guess is the term.

I thought you were going to say George really stold a lot of ideas from Frank. That is the first thing I thought of and I'm a huge Star Wars fan.

I just got finished watching it and thought it was really well done. Now it’s going to be hard to wait for the next one.

Dune is like an 11 on the nerd-scale. It's not for everyone. I never read the original books, but did see the 1st movie adaptation, with Kyle MacLachlan, Sting and Sean Young. Certainly interesting, fun to watch, but I felt lost on so much of the backstory.

Sounds like the true fans are praising this flick. Don't know why we'd get a good movie and not follow it up with 2 more. Maybe it'll do well enough to warrant sequels.

Wife and I went into it knowing nothing except that it had big worms and was based around Spice. That was it.

We actually thought the second half trumped the first half by a good bit. For the casual movie fan, there’s just soooo much to take in for the first half. There’s a lot to take in that by the time you get your bearings, half the movie is over. Granted, we both liked it, but I didn’t really get immersed in the world until the first worm attack. After that, I was in.

Completely agreed. You don’t get a good sense about why House Atreides is feared (are they popular among other houses? Do they have the biggest or best trained military? So much of this you’re just asked to assume and accept.) I also left with questions about who initiated the attack, the Emperor or the Harkonens? Just important info, with there being so much exposition, that felt important that wasn’t given. Ditto for why everyone thinks Paul is the one. Is it because he’s a male truthsayer? And why do two different sets of cultures believe he’s the One? What is the One’s purpose? There’s just a lot that you’re asked to just accept with minimal explanation.

Granted, DV had a lot of work to do just to dumb it down enough for it to be enjoyable, which it was. And there was only so much he could fit in and explain. But I feel like that will alienate some casuals

House Atriedes is one of the most popular and one of the better armies. The emperor by far has the biggest and best army.

The emperor and the Harkonen brokered an agreement because the emperors knows no one would folllw the harkonen in anything and they were efficient.

I don’t think the movie quite pushed hard enough that everyone knew the atriedes were absolutely fricked including the atriedes.

I got that after I googled but my point is that it’s sort of vague about why the two sides actually joined forces against House Atreides in the film itself.

The only bit of info about how strong House Atreides actually is is when the two other armies are conspiring and the Emperor’s forces say that Atreides isn’t as strong as they are, despite them being quite formidable. Otherwise, you’re left guessing other than the Baron maybe convincing the Emperor that Atreides is dangerous. Regardless, it’s still a damn fine movie and the material is dense and they did a good enough job explaining most of it.

But there are flaws to me that kept me from getting entirely engrossed in the world for the first half of the movie.

I loved the movie but I did think it was pretty obnoxiously clumsy in certain areas. Movie would have been like 20 minutes shorter if they cut all the visions which I don’t think are necessary yet. I do think in the book we know why Paul is afraid but I couldn’t even here Paul when he starts talking about the crusade

Man, that was so good. Possibly the most visually stunning movie I have ever seen. I knew nothing about Dune going in but I didnt have any trouble following the story, other than certain parts that were hard to understand what was being said. A rewatch on HBOmax with subtitles will help that out. Excellent movie, cant wait to watch it again.

Well, Gary from Nerdrotics would disagree. Meaning that it's usually the nerdiest of the nerds who can get into and appreciate DUNE.

Unlike Star Wars, Star Trek or some other franchises, which have a wider, more ' normie ' appeal.

But your taste may vary.

the first book is weird I agree but at least coherent.
the rest of the books are batshit insane and dare I say it, too weird for me. I’m fine if (as is likely) this Dune is just two movies

once the endgame with Paul in this book one storyline is done, I doubt there will be a clamor to see any of the rest on film

Yeah I think it was a misstep to not re-create the scene from the first movie when the guild navigators came to meet with the Emperor. Scene actually shed light on why House Atreides was such a threat and why Paul is the threat he is. But I really enjoyed the movie.
