It's actually entertaining.I know it's scripted and all but Uncle Si is great. And Jase with that deadpan delivery cracks me up.

This...Jase and the way he talks is pretty funny.

I've only seen a few episodes, but LOTS of people I know absolutely love the show. They always praise it as not ony funny but also having pretty solid moral/family values in it. So I can see why it would be appealing to people, especially families.

But the few episodes I've seen were actually funny. Obviously it's ridiculously scripted, but they all are these days...so once you get past that, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm not setting my DVR to record it or anything, but if it's on I'll definitely check it out here and there.

Jase has really good comedic timing for a semi-normal redneck.

I went to Austin a few weeks ago to visit family and they kept talking about DD. I was trying to explain to them the difference between rednecks (north LA) and coonasses (south LA).

The first season was good. They must have ran out of ideas because almost all of it is scripted now.

These were my thoughts on Duck Dynasty from a poli board thread a while back:

quote:

I'm a pretty big TV snob, though I'm getting better about that. Duck Dynasty is the only guided-reality show that I watch.

It's kind of refreshing to see a group of relatively down to earth people espousing family values and cracking wise with each other.

By no means will I say it's the best show on TV, or the funniest, but to me, it's better than a lot of shite that's out there. Much better than just about everything on MTV where they incentivize and commoditize irresponsible behavior.

ETA: I don't know when the new episodes air, or what season we're in, but I watch it when I'm flipping through the channels.

Exactly. I also think the show is not just scripted by obviously scripted in a way that I think the guys are putting one over on the audience. Everything is done with a nod and a wink. The show is much smarter than it is given credit for, as I think its reached the point where it is actually making fun of reality shows.

One of my big gripes with reality shows is that they are really, really mean. It's pretty much "laugh at the freaks" and the lowest form of entertainment. There's nothing rewarding about it. DD, I fell the cast is in on the joke and they are laughing with the audience at how ridiculous this whole thing is. Jase is almost like "can you believe they pay me for this shite?" It's a breed apart from other reality shows at its very core -- its a show that wants you to like its characters. Every one of them. It has more in common with an 80s sitcom than an 00s reality show.

It's very obviously scripted, so much to the point it gets annoying at times. But there are worse things you could watch.
This. And honestly, after about 4 episodes you've seen everything they have to offer.

It's harmless. If I had younger kids we would probably watch it together as a family.

I do agree with that. There definitely seems to be a sort of "meta" vibe with it. It's like you said, they're basically just hanging out doing stupid shite (that they know is stupid and are playing it up for the cameras) and getting paid for it. One of my first experiences with DD was when they were chipping golf balls and shooting them with shotguns. I was like "Riiiiight, this show is obviously stupid." And I didn't watch it. But now that I've actually seen a few episodes, you can definitely notice that they all know what's up and don't care that they're playing themselves down for the cameras.

And like you said, it's not like MTV shows where they just put a bunch of crazy people together and feed them gallons of booze.

My wife is involved in all the artsy fartsy non profit stuff in North La. She was at the Masur Museum in Monroe one day when the older brother was there shooting and she said they had him redo some stuff because it wasn't redneck enough.

Not surprising.

They're all caricatures of rednecks anyway. The old war vet. Former athletes. Religious. Carefree outdoorsie types, but with an underlying voice of reason/safety and solid families. shite, they even made their money with duck calls for chrissakes. And they all have super giant beards. They're characters. So A&E just dresses them in camo every day and soups up their normal behavior for the cameras.

I do like that it's one of the few shows out there that actually don't portay us as inbred idiots who ride in pirogues to work everyday. At least there's some substance to it.

They're in on the joke. Like Phil said in the first episode, Si is the only one without a college degree. They were millionaires before the show. They're playing up the redneck schtick.

I had never heard of it till Season 2. I thought it was retarded at first but then found myself laughing at it. Now we all watch as a family. It is a scripted show meant to entertain. Know this and enjoy.

I enjoy it a lot.

Yes, what they do is extremely scripted, but most of their dialogue seems pretty legit.

Phil and Si have me laughing every time they talk. It's a show that is enjoyable. Nothing more, nothing less.
