Don't be surprised if La Bola Negra ends up sweeping the Oscars this year...

It had already premiered at Cannes but apparently it was a big hit at the Toronto International Film Festival, winning the coveted "fan favorite" award. There was a standing ovation which lasted the entire length of the credits and beyond.
Anyways...it's going to win because it checks all the right boxes:
Historical epic? Check.
Foreign language film? Check.
"Important" subject matter? Check.

I know this because I can list every single film that has won Best Picture from memory. Beyond the autism that that entails, knowing all the films also gives me insight into how the Academy thinks. And how it thinks is very reactive. They are willing to latch onto the issue de jour of the day. While the film takes place in Spain, it features Spanish speakers. What's going on in the United States right now? ICE, a crackdown on illegal immigration, border control, etc.
Here now you have acclaimed foreign language film from Spain, released by Netflix, who is pulling out all the stops to get that elusive trophy it has so long desired. They're giving it a 45-day theatrical release - unheard of for them. They are marketing the hell out of this to Academy voters and film festival attendees. This is a full court press. No doubt the actors will be asked questions about the current climate in the U.S. in regards to immigration and they will somehow tie it all back to gay rights.
Voters will eat that shite up. Especially those voters who have Christopher Nolan and Odyssey fatigue.

Considering the subject matter, you would think they would go all the way with the DEI Oscar pandering and make it an interracial queer throuple. It is called The Black Ball, after all.
