Does Netflix have a quantity over quality issue with their original content?

It seems like 95% of the original shows and movies they put out are very mediocre.

They have had some great stuff. I'm thinking of shows like Narcos, The Crown & the first seasons of House of Cards. Also some decent movies like Beasts of No Nation, Mudbound, and First They Killed My Father.

But past that, there is a whole big pile of bleh.

They definitely have a better record on shows vs. movies. The movies they keep constantly pumping out are mediocre.

Meh. Netflix library is pretty deep (Much deeper than Amazon imho). The issue is that ppl tend to rewatch old shows and not seek out new material (I'm guilty of watching The Office a bit too much).

Also, a lot of the series from overseas are labeled as "Netflix Originals" when they are not.

I think it takes time to find your footing in this situation. Some Hollywood types still look down on high quality streaming films. They are killing it in the stand-up specials and documentaries categories.

The only service that comes remotely close would be HBO imo.

They have some pretty big winners as far as TV shows go. I'll bet their success rate is above the industry standard. Doesn't mean that don't have total shite as well.

They haven't found their stride with movies yet. Take a look at any "best netflix original movie" list and it gets awful pretty quick.

No shite. They struck gold with a few shows, but most are complete shite. A lot of them have offputting, 2nd rate production value

South Park on Netflix

They have some really great stuff, but you're right - if you really evaluate their content as a whole, it's mostly shite. It's a whole lot of shite.

I told my wife the other night that she should stop scrolling through Netflix to find a show. It's better to wait until something goes viral then watch it.

Seems they have a pretty good mix of stuff, and scrolling through them all can get overwhelming, but I've never watched most of them to know if they suck or not.

Netflix is pumping out more content that anyone. Unlike traditional channels, they dont have a strict nightly lineup to fill.

Hundreds of millions of people go to Netflix everyday to watch something. They have to pump out a lot more than 10-15 original shows a season to appease people, and to have new things for people to watch.

Yeah, there is a fair share of things that are misses, but they also have a lot of successes, and its not just tv shows. They have great documentaries and stand up specials. Yes, the movies are somewhat lacking, but they are throwing money at the Hollywood elite to change this.

You have a lot of old heads that look down on Netflix because it's not traditional media.

I focus on the documentaries, mostly, and those are good. I agree for scripted material they probably have bought too much and are invested in too much - Hulu seems to be taking their place as the "syndication" home for other network shows - or at least it seems that way to me. Netflix has been on a 4 or 5 years mission to develop as much original content as they can so that they have intrinsic value. I think they saw their vulnerability in the emerging market as a potentially endangered "gatekeeper" however large and powerful and original content was their response.

Having said that - Amazon seems to "get" me better than Netflix, overall. Amazon has the best "one stop" option if you decided to go that way, although the cost would be higher as you had to purchase things that might be offered by other services by subscription.

And I agree that HBO probably has the highest quality per show of their original content - both Netflix and Amazon seem to be following a hybrid approach somewhere between Netflix original business model and HBO. As it is now, I pay for Netflix, HBO Now and Amazon Prime. If I dumped 1 of them, no question it would be Netflix. If I had to choose between HBO Now and Amazon Prime - I'm keeping Prime (at least for now - eventually they will jack up the price to the point where I'll have to question it) for all the other Prime features - streaming is almost an afterthought - or it used to be.

It will change once they are the ones getting paid to make their dream movies by Netflix

Upcoming releases

Cargo
-Martin Freeman
Just released. Supposedly its a pretty good zombie movie. Not really my things though.

The Higwaymen
-Woody Harrelson and Kevin Costner play two former Texas Rangers during the Bonnie & Clyde crime spree.

Velvet Buzzsaw
-Horror movie starring Jake Gyllenahaal and Rene Russo

Norway
-Directed by Paul Greengrass about the 2011 Norway terrorist attacks

Apostle
-Directed by Gareth Evans. About a religious cult on a remote island.

Outlaw King
-Chris Pine plays Robert the Bruce. Stephen Dillane and Aaron Taylor Johnson also star.

Bird Box
-Thriller based on book starring Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, and Sara Paulson.

Thats just the bigger movies coming out this year from Netflix, and doesnt take into account The Irishman from Scorsese, more films by the Duplass Brothers, the Ryan Reynolds/Michael Bay action movie, Roma directed by Alfonso Cuaron, or Triple Frontier that stars Ben Affleck Oscar Issac and Charlie Hunnam.

I don't think it's an issue, I think it's a goal. At some point they'll probably have to pull back on the spending and be more judicious with it, but for now it's an arms race to grow your subscriber base and create a critical mass of content so that in 5 years when everyone has cut the cord, Netflix will still be one of the 2-4 services most people subscribe to.

I would also argue that everyone faces this problem. Even HBO has a ton of mediocre shows in their catalog, they just have somehow managed to consistently have some of the bigger hits for the better part of the last 2 decades.
