I don't think it's an issue, I think it's a goal. At some point they'll probably have to pull back on the spending and be more judicious with it, but for now it's an arms race to grow your subscriber base and create a critical mass of content so that in 5 years when everyone has cut the cord, Netflix will still be one of the 2-4 services most people subscribe to.

Bingo. Every syllable.

Right now they are desperate to build a library that has volume all of its own. It’s a bad look just have a few shows to skim, even if most of them are meh.

I wonder how much they are shooting for is to weather and outcompete the streaming saturation that is about to happen so they can get company’s material back.

I do like that they are able to do a lot of niche programming. They can seek out a specific audience and make something for that little fanatical group without worrying about a larger set of popularity. And their kids' programming is awesome. New Magic School Bus and Voltron? We are so in at the Baloo Cave. The cubs love it.

That’s the other thing about them.

They don’t really need popularity on any one show like regular TV.

Someone might not like a list of things but as long as someone else does and it is part of the reason for their subscription then who cares?

Once Netflux has sunk the costs it is essentially nothing to contribute to provide that content indefinitely.

I mean its their whole business model currently. If they produce enough original content hopefully there are 5 shows someone likes enough to keep subscribing. Throw it at the wall and see what sticks so to speak. Sprinkle in a few movies to hold interest in between new seasons coming out and everyone stays subscribed.

They also seem to hit on one big show at the right time.

Stranger things hit right as orange is the new black and House of cards started to loose steam

Ozark hit right as Bloodline started to lose steam

Punisher hit after the Iron fish defenders debacle etc.

Not knocking it out the park but keeping it just good enough for most not to unsubscribe.

They have a lot of good shows. I've never watched a Netflix original movie. Between Netflix shows, HBO shows and regular cable channel shows, there is way more good stuff than I have time to watch and Netflix definitely pulls its weight. Netflix originals or exclusives I watched the last couple of years that I thought were good:

-Mindhunter
-Stranger Things
-Narcos
-The Crown
-Ozark
-The Marvel Stuff (particularly Daredevil but I've watched them all and they are at least decent)
-House of Cards
-Bloodline
-Peaky Blinders (I count these Netflix exclusives because even though not really Netflix "original content" I don't know where else to get it easily and I never would have known about it without Netflix and Netflix has in some cases continued to fund production of these shows that started elsewhere)
-Making a Murderer
-Several 1-hour stand up comedy specials

That's more series than I've watched from cable and HBO combined over the last few years. I don't time to watch more even though there are a few other Netflix series that have been recommended that I would like to watch eventually.

ETA: forgot to mention the kids shows. They have some good stuff that my kids love.

The How to Train Your Dragon series is great
Inspector Gadget reboot
Puss in Boots
King Julien
Story Bots
DinoTrux
Voltron reboot
Various Lego collaborations

Most of the kids tv watching comes from Netflix and a good portion of it is original content I think.
