Nicholson, I remember reading that he said he was retiring because he could no longer remember his lines.
I read recently (on the internet so take it for what it's worth) that Jack has pretty bad memory problems and is basically a shut in at this point.

There are still parts for older people and many must enjoy doing it. Look at the women in the Brady movie. Several of them are in their 80's. Morgan Freeman still acts. Judi Dench is almost blind and still acts. Betty White had a completely renewed career that went into her 90s.
It just depends on what they want to do and if they can still remember their lines.

Cary Grant might be the biggest star I can think of who publicly declared he was done acting and stayed retired.

Rick Moranis
Retired after his wife died of breast cancer to be there for his kids. They only had 5 years together before she died.
He did some writing and voice work, but it was very limited after her death.

Same here except I think Clint Eastwood has now retired. He has no upcoming movies since his last one.

Does it really count when you’re 92 and just filmed a movie last year?

Isn't Jack Nicholson retired now?
According to CDAN, Nicholson is damned-near dead.

For him yes. Ive kept up with his movie productions and by time one comes out, he's already working on another one.

That's a bummer, I love Jack. I watched Chinatown and The Two Jakes last weekend.

Ones I can remember truly retiring
Joel McCrea (both later came back briefly)
Randolph Scott
Cary Grant -- supposedly was offered Sleuth but declined
Grace Kelly -- took another job. Later was offered Marnie and The Turning Point; considered taking them but ultimately chose to stay retired.
Dolores Hart -- became a nun. Srsly.

Many actresses have realized they're aging out of their ingenue years and roles will soon become scarcer, so they've married real estate tycoons and raised a family.
Linda Haynes -- hot babe of the '70s. Was playing solid supporting roles in A pictures and leads in Bs when she quit to -- I kid you not -- become a legal secretary in Florida
Robert McQueeney -- TV actor who became a priest

But perhaps the most curious example is an actor named Christopher Jones, who co-starred w/Robert Mitchum in a David Lean film -- then up and quit. Look him up.

Is Christopher Walken still around?

Didn't Joe Pesci retire for a good bit?

He was in the first season of Severance that was just out recently. Also a show on Prime called The Outlaws that had it's second season finished recently. Severance was one of the bigger roles outside of the main characters. And at least the first season of Outlaws (haven't watched second yet) he was a pretty big part.
I guess the best part is he's still Christopher Walken. Just an older version but not a shadow of his former self.

Warner Bros finally decided to stop giving him money?

Some of them want to retire but they have f--cked up kids addicted to an affluent lifestyle with little to no means to provide for themselves.

He has “retired” twice now.
He’s only done until the next great role comes along.

Jack Gleeson retired, but has come back and done some things.

Seems trivial but once he got veneers he developed this wet slur like Lou Holtz that is pretty much too distracting to watch and listen to
