Did anyone see Hadestown?

Saw it last night with my wife and one of her friends who’s big into broadway. I’m definitely a broadway fan but more so, when I’m in New York I go to see a lot of shows. I’ve never necessarily sought it out on my own. Generally since I was in high school any musical or play I saw I generally enjoyed. Something about the live performance and also being an art major myself I think helps me enjoy it as well from a technical aspect.
Anyway, I’d never heard of this until she suggested we go. It’s definitely a little more esoteric and operatic than my typical favorite musicals but damn I did really enjoy it. Once the story got rolling I was able to follow it much better. It’s based on the story of Orpheus trying to save his lover from Hades as well as the relationship of Hades and Persephone causing havoc on the world.
Overall I just definitely enjoyed it even though it was maybe a little more over my head than the typical musical that’s a little more straightforward with the story. Anybody else here see it and enjoy it?

It is a great show, really fun twist on the original myth.

It’s like a steam punk retelling in a lot of ways.

The show is great. I'm not going to get to a theater to see the pro shot, but I've heard good things.
I was surprised to see that this one is the highest ever box office opening for a Broadway pro shot. I imagined hadestown as a show that has been very popular on Broadway but did have a ton of awareness outside musical theater audiences. I was obviously wrong.

Steam punk meets 1920's new orleans essentially.

I saw it a few years back. Absolutely a fantastic retelling of the greek tragedy.

I could not get past the song that was so important. It was like the Elmo theme song.

I actually agree. La la la la? Seriously
Overall yes I did like it but man they didn’t make the important song really that great.

It’s a great show. Not preachy. Faithful to the Orpheus and Persephone myths. Gives Eurydice a bit more agency—did she choose death or did it just happen to her?
It’s also not based on an IP or trying to change the meaning or events of the original tale. Best show to come out of Broadway in the last decade by far.

I’m not getting out much these days, but
I’ve read interesting things about the show.

If broadway is hit or miss for you I can see this one being a little over the casual viewers head. It definitely was over mine at times until I relistened to the sound track the next day. The story is much looser and heavier on the music almost like an opera.
If you’re looking to have a clean story with some music thrown in it’s more music with some light story thrown in if that makes sense.

My wife and 16 yo daughter saw it in New Orleans back in the Spring. They really enjoyed it. The daughter has been really into Greek mythology since she was 13 or so.
