I’m with Him....

I’ve actually always liked to think of Armageddon as a sequel of sorts.

Based on the events in Deep Impact, we start this new program combining astronauts and drilling experts in preparation for another collision event, so the drillers have actually been preparing for this for a while before being called up for the mission.

Gives it a bit more credibility than all of this being prepped and put together in just a few days.

President's speech in Armageddon > President's speech in Deep Impact.

What the government does in Deep Impact is horseshite. Hordes all of the resources so a select million, which of course includes all the leaders of government, can survive. More people should have survived that wave if they could have got west of the mountains. Or perhaps modified boats or submersibles. Just more could be done than imposing martial law and freezing prices. Citizens should have revolted once the wave subsided or another government bomb the super shelter..

Michael Bay and credibility should never be associated together. When you go into a Michael Bay movie, the first thing you do is shut your brain completely off.

Nah I think what they did was about as fair as possible. They didn’t “hoard all of the resources”. Had they had the ability to build a bunker big enough for everyone, they would have. That just isn’t reasonable though. But they did all they could to maintain order while also keeping the public as informed as could be expected.

But there does have to be some sort of plan for a group to survive so that humanity isn’t extinguished in a worst case scenario.

They announced the plan to the public and had a lottery where everyone was eligible. Had they hid the plan and just kept all the government or elected officials safe that would be bullshite. But they opened the process up and tried to include as many from different walks of life as they could.

The fact that they told the populace a year in advance is about as transparent as you could expect.

If I remember correctly the people were stuck East of the mountains because they didn’t know exactly where it would hit. And when the bomb split it in half that also changed the trajectory of the smaller part so they were really caught off guard by where it hit. I think they announced it as quickly as possible which is why there was that big rush to head West after the bomb broke it apart.

I actually thought Deep Impact showed pretty rational response from the government all the way down to the populace. Probably better than it would be in reality to be honest.

I prefer Armageddon, but I did think Deep Impact did a great job with the story of the astronauts on The Messiah. That was the part that resonated the most with me, particularly with the one that gets blinded and Duvall. Those were some great scenes, as was the scene with Tea Leoni going to her father as the wave hits.

Deep impact was a comet unlike an asteroid in Armageddon

Also they did split it in 2 in Deep impact which made the crash site impossible to predict.

I love Armageddon, and most Bay movies, as much as anyone. Didn't mean that as a criticism, just saying the idea that this team had been prepped longer would be a nice benefit of imagining Armageddon takes place in the same universe as Deep Impact.

This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. Not sure why really, but I watch it whenever it’s on.

Did you not realize the super shelter was only used because the original space mission was unsuccessful? After the crew sacrificed themselves to blow up the bigger part of the split comet the shelter wasn't necessary anymore. That's why anybody on the surface survived at all.

I'm glad someone brought this up. I've always heard Armageddon was way better, by consensus, but always felt Deep Impact was better. Now I feel human, I'm not an animal.

They didn’t use the caves.

The caves were for if the whole thing hit and it would have made the surface uninhabitable.

Comet split in the course of the movie, and the sacrifice took out the larger chuck.

The part that hit had no major lasting effects, just the wave.

Armageddon- " it's easier to train roughnecks to be astronauts than to train astronauts to be roughnecks "

Armageddon is a better movie because it doesn't try to give some deep philosophy to everything.

Deep Impact does have Mogran Freeman in it though, so...

Armageddon succeeded in making a truly entertaining popcorn flick that featured humor, action, and emotion. That is exactly what a summer blockbuster flick should be about. Armageddon, Independence Day, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and Twister were the quintessential summer blockbuster films of the 1990s as far as I'm concerned.

Armageddon has the better action, but Deep Impact actually has half of the comet hit Earth in spectacular fashion and is worth the price of admission. It also has the better sacrifice, IMO. The astronauts diving full-throttle into the comet after tearful good byes was pretty badass.

Also has a great line:

"look on the brightside, at least we'll all have middle schools named after us"

Also love that its Fish that comes up with the plan. He of the old school and why the eff are you even here talk at the beginning. And that the commander, the guy giving him the most shite initially, is the only one on the same page while he's laying it out.

Always thought that was a great dynamic. Showing that age and wisdom has its place and that it also involves the bravery of the youth to lead everyone there.

"We don't" and the way he says it, at that point, the light goes off and everyone is like, shite. Just a great scene all around.

This. Was 17 at the time and saw just about every summer movie in theaters that year with my lifeguard coworkers. Always thought deep impact was just more fun.
