I went to high school in Avoyelles Parish in the late 80s. Between that and college, I met basically every character in that movie. There was a guy who went to something like eight straight proms. He was steady dating high school girls way into his 20s.

The tradition was for seniors to ring freshmen -- after they got their senior rings, they would turn them around so the stone was in their palm and slap us upside the head. My freshman year, they decided to start giving the the juniors their senior rings at the end of the school year. So we got to go through the whole thing twice.

that long haired, wussy looking freshmen kid.

I hate that kid and his reactions outside the game room.

I understand that they want to portray his character as the goofy, awkward, socially aloof freshman so I can kinda get why he does the nose touch thing occasionally, because it is a goofy, awkward, socially aloof type of thing to do.

What I don't understand is why they during the editing process SOMEONE didn't say "hey, this guy does this thing like 87 times, it's kinda repetitive, maybe let's scrap a few of em"? I mean surely everyone on set had to realize it was way way too overdone.

Never saw it anywhere but on sports practice facilities. Never saw it going on with civilian students on campus, but I went to public schools. Might have caught a slash from a cake cutter, or a Case knife back then. We all carried one, or the other.

It was a school-wide institution at the all boys Catholic high school I went to in the 90's. But we didn't have a lot of knife fights.

Like in the movie, most people just had fun with it, but there were one or two who really got off on it and wanted to pay back the incoming freshmen for whatever happened to them, I guess. That resulted in it getting watered down a ton between my freshman year and senior year as parents became more concerned about it.

You sure that he didn't break his ankle when he tripped over the curb and said, "y'all ready to bust some arse!!"? Tidbit: he is wearing Chucks in that opening scene but wearing boots right afterwards and for the rest of the movie.

He no doubt busts his ankle with the paddle. I'm wondering if that is why he is wearing Chucks. Maybe that scene was shot after the paddle busting.

But I had a buddy point out to me how many time that kid touches his nose/face, and it is a lot. I never noticed it before he pointed it out to me, but that kid definitely had some sort of nervous nose/face touching habit. You can definitely do a drinking game with it.

YES! Was on a party bus from Nashville to Atlanta a few years ago and we did this.

Linklater grew up in Huntsville (TX). There are a few people there who have a legitimate claim to that. One in particular wasn't real happy about people thinking that he's who Wooderson was based on.

But it's not like it's based on any specific event. Linklater just wanted to make a movie about what high school was really like: driving around bored, trying to get some beer, getting tickets for the big concert...etc. Basically, the exact opposite of all those "coming of age" melodramas about high school life in the 80's.

Got to give an obligatory shout-out to Mr. Payne, the black 'Nam Vet teacher. Dude was awesome.

Love me some Parker Posey. "LICK ME!"
Oh, you bet your arse I would, sweetie.

My other favorite to MM's Wooderson is Brad Pitt's "Floyd" in True Romance.
