The problem with Xmen films is that you can never ever top the OG animated series andarge chunks of XMen 97. Those flow the peak 80s/90s comic book storylines that made the franchise the number 1 Marvel property for decades.
They've also already butchered the best comic adaptations in the Fox films (age of apocalypse, Dark phoenix, etc), so where do they even go?
Another problem is that Xavier is the least compelling main character but he is central to the story so it's very hard to cast. Magneto, Apocyose, Wolverine and side characters like Cable, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Omega Red, Psylocke, etc are what nade Smen so good. Not Cyclops, Beast, Jean and the professor.
Veey tough franchise to breath life into unless they absolutely kill it with directors, writers and actors that stay faithful in some part to the books.

She would have definitely been better off being cast as simply a block of ice

Rewatched X-Men (2001) last night. Forgot how good it was.
2000-2004 was a nice run for the superhero genre:
X-Men in 2000
Premiere of Smallville in 2001
Spiderman and Blade II in 2002
X2 in 2003
Punisher and Spiderman 2 in 2004

Part of the problem with those stories is that they are too long and too big for a single movie. Similarly, those are really just parts of a larger story of the characters and/or group. That's why X1 and X2 worked so well, they were really just origin stories about Rogue and then Wolverine (respectively). X3 was the attempt to do a rushed version of an epic which had taken years to tell across 34 issues. If you're going to do something like that, you have to do it like they did Infinity War, where it's sprinkled in increasing amounts over successive movies and there simply was no desire to do so back then (nor faith it could ever work).

The woman always has the most disinterested, bored face in every role I’ve seen her in

I don’t think we’ll ever see another masterclass in introducing an ensemble cast like we did with the OG MCU. That’s really what they should go for with an XMen reboot but some of the best storylines have been done and redone (and not very well) it will be difficult. Also, throwing 20 characters at you in one movie seems like a mistake.
My reference is the 80’s Byrne and Smith XMen so I’m preferential to that group. There’s so much good writing through that run it would be great to see a faithful attempt at some of those story lines.
My asks:
Quit trying to force Mystique into the front
Give us the OG Storm
Import Deadpool Colossus and Juggernaut
Start casting now for Wolverine - and he needs to be short and mean
