“Counselor “

When I was a student at Auburn, (late 90s/early 2000s), they would show a free movie on campus every Friday and Saturday night. These were movies that had just recently left the theater and hadn't made it to home video yet or were just a few years old.

One weekend they were showing Cape Fear, so my roommate and I went to see it. DeNiro's character freaked him out out. We get back, he goes to bed. I stay up reading. I wait until his lights are all off and start in the "Counselor" line, as best as I could imitating that voice. Scared the shite out of him.

one of the best Simpsons episodes was based on Cape Fear

Lawyer : What about that tattoo on your chest? Doesn't it say die Bart, die?

Sideshow Bob : No, that's German for The Bart, The.

Woman on Parole Board : No one who speaks German could be an evil man.

DeNiro and Lewis made that scene seem almost too real.

I usually fast-forward through that scene now. It is remarkably good acting and as you say seems almost too real. Danny did get a measure of revenge in the end. Max putting Sam on "trial" on the houseboat was an excellent scene as well.

The level of tension in Cape Fear matches movies like Black Hawk Down but also seems more real.

BTW the '91 version is on Starz now but the '62 version is only available to rent via streaming.

I wonder how the story would have played out if Sam (Nolte) was stronger/smarter and was able to back and forth with Cady better? IIRC Cady nullified or even reversed every move Sam tried to make, and hence he seemed pretty bumbling.

I think this may be DeNiro's most overlooked and underrated performance.

I think he sucked in it. That accent was terrible, whatever it was.

I would tend to agree. As an "actor" he sold out, really, for 3 big roles - Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Cape Fear.

Now, I take his work during the productive/creative era of his fear (pre-hack phase) very seriously. He was reasonably invested, in his own way and with his own method, in virtually everything from his early films through about Meet the Parents and then it was spotty after that.

But, even when he was great during that period (and even after in bright spots since 2000), he was acting at a high level, but not lost in those characters like he was in his "Big 3" (+ young Vito in G2, but that was in support).

I’m Virgil and I'm guidin' you through the gates of Hell. We are now in the Ninth Circle, the Circle of Traitors. Traitors to country! Traitors to fellow man! Traitors to GOD! You, sir, are charged with betrayin' the principles of all three! Quote for me the American Bar Association's Rules of Professional Conduct, Canon Seven.
Sam Bowden : "A lawyer should represent his client... "
Max Cady : "Should ZEALOUSLY represent his client within the bounds of the law." I find you guilty, counselor! Guilty of betrayin' your fellow man! Guilty of betrayin' your country and abrogatin' your oath! Guilty of judgin' me and sellin' me out! With the power vested in me by the kingdom of God, I sentence you to the Ninth Circle of Hell! Now you will learn about loss! Loss of freedom! Loss of humanity! Now you and I will truly be the same...

He got the Oscar nom for the role, but yes, most people don't know about it today.

This makes me feel old.

Original was made in 1962 and the remake came out in 1991 (29 year difference).

It's been 32 years since the remake came out.

LOTR:ROTK was on today and I was taken aback by realizing and then stating to my son that it came out 20 years ago.

Oh well, you either die or get old enough for shite to get old.

The 1990's was probably the best decade of Hollywood in terms of movie making. So many incredible movies were made in that decade!
