The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced it will no longer fund movies featuring villain characters with facial scars. The organization’s decision supports the growing #IAmNotYourVillain campaign started by Changing Faces, the United Kingdom’s leading charity group for people with a visible difference such as a mark or scar. The group has made it their mission to de-stigmatize facial scars in film and television since scarring is often used on villains (see The Joker, Darth Vader, and more), and now the BFI is vowing to support that effort.
quote:
“Film is a catalyst for change and that is why we are committing to not having negative representations depicted through scars or facial difference in the films we fund,” BFI Deputy CEO Ben Roberts said in a statement. “This campaign speaks directly to the criteria in the BFI diversity standards, which call for meaningful representations on-screen. We fully support Changing Faces’s #IAmNotYourVillain campaign, and urge the rest of the film industry to do the same.”
quote:
Becky Hewitt, Changing Faces’ chief executive, added, “The film industry has such power to influence the public with its representation of diversity, and yet films use scars and looking different as a shorthand for villainy far too often.”
quote:
Not only will the BFI stop funding films with facially scarred villains, but it will also attempt to course-correct the conversation around visible differences by financing the film “Dirty God.” The drama, set to premiere at Sundance in January, stars Vicky Knight as a burn survivor reentering society after an acid attack
quote:
Changing Faces provides advice, support, and psychosocial services to children, young people and adults with visible differences. According to the charity, there are 1.3 million people in the United Kingdom who have a visible difference. “We challenge discrimination and we campaign for Face Equality: a world that truly values and respects people who look different,” the charity’s website reads.

The scars are a symptom of Vader turning evil, not the cause. Jesus.

And everything fun is illegal.

So they are “protecting” the scarred by limiting their job prospects.

Man, yall melt over the most minuscule shite.

Main point of the story aside, BFI just perfectly communicated the mindset difference between filmakers and their audience...
This isn’t going to win the BFI enough allies to offset all the people who are tired of their pompous self-righteousness
quote:bullshite. Film is a catalyst for entertainment. 95% of moviegoers watch films because they want a temporary escape from the outside world, not because they want to be lectured about all the things wrong with it. And if the industry continues to ignore that, they’ll continue to lose moviegoers.

bullshite. Film is a catalyst for entertainment.
Hollywood truly believes they change the world.
Look at George Clooney's Oscar acceptance speech.

Hollywood leaders are quite literally the jester’s of today’s world.
It’s astounding (/pitiful) that some folks actually live their lives based on what these people say.

What happens when a qualified scarred actor wants a role, but they don't give it to him just because he has a scar?
Is that discrimination?
Is that discrimination?

Blofeld! How will that work now with him coming back in James Bond? Dumb
What an odd thing to suddenly take a stance on. was this really a big problem that had to be addressed? The better way to handle it would be to make a hero with scars.

Meaning villains can now only be rich, straight, able-bodied caucasian characters.
GOT's season one Jaime Lannister and Shrek's Prince Charming must already have BFI's approval.

Funny thing is that those people actually believe they are important.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen an organization support.
I mean, we're getting to the point where all representations of people will have to be....
But of course, that will offend grey people, so I'm at a loss as to where we go from here.
