Black Widow grossed $80 million in theaters and $60 million on Disney+ over the weekend

This apparently has a lot of people concerned. Movie theater stocks have fallen today as a result and a lot of people are asking questions about the future of movie theaters.

Overall revenue for the North American box office totaled $117 million for the weekend, the highest since President’s Day weekend in mid-February of 2020. Black Widow opened domestically at $80 million. But the gross dropped on Saturday from Thursday/Friday way more than usual for a Marvel title and the question is how much Disney+ Premier Access was behind that erosion.
Disney reported $60 million of revenue from its streaming platform — the first time its revealed these stats. “Disney is clearly pleased with this outcome, especially since it does not have to share any meaningful part of this income with partners,” said analyst Eric Handler of MKM Partners.
Specifically, as per Deadline, Black Widow‘s Saturday saw a huge 41% drop from its near $40M opening Friday (which included Thursday previews).
Disney stock closed up 4.15% Monday. The hybrid release was clearly a benefit but what remains to be seen the the impact on future downstream windows. Handler notes that some 2 million households — about 60-80 million people, he speculated — have already seen the movie at home.
Disney plans to release Jungle Cruise (July 28) on PVOD too and many fear it may continue the model for other tentpoles.

I see BW as the exception to the rule.
People will go see a Marvel movie in the theaters and just as many will pay to watch it at home.
Your average summer blockbuster won’t get that kind of response. Anything good enough to get that kind of response will generally be theater only.

This is the first time Disney+ has ever released numbers for Premium Access content.

Those aren’t terrible numbers. That was pretty much the target that I had heard it needed for at least the low end. The real test will come week 2.

I agree. The fanboys will always rush to the theater to see it opening weekend. Will casual fans do so as well over the next few weeks?
I think a portion of the population will never return to the theaters after covid. How big that portion is will tell the future of movies in theaters vs streaming.

I’ve been to the theaters three times since March. Course it’ll take the right movie, but I’ve got no problem watching in the theater.
Black widow is not that movie for me though.

Theaters going away is the worst thing that can happen to movies.
Unless you a wealthy and have your own home THEATER - not some 75 incher in your living room with an overrated sound system - then nothing will come close to the in theater experience. If fewer theaters are open that will lead to streamers charging more and more for their new movies. $30 becomes $40 then $50 then $60 and who knows where it goes to. $30 is a great value for a family of 4, good deal for a couple, not ideal for a single viewer. $40 is a good deal for a family of 4, solid for a couple, but trash for a single viewer. It only gets worse from there.
Plus I don’t trust large corporations with more control over who accesses their content, but that’s another discussion.

Spent the 30 bucks. Watched at home with wife and kids. Will choose this option every time it is available.
Don't have to deal with assholes at the movies talking or on cell phones.

You’re going to the wrong theaters.

$80 million was US box office. The $60 million is the worldwide Disney+ take. The US numbers for D+ are probably more like $25-$30 million. Also 19% of the US theaters are still closed.
If it had been a 60/40 split w/all theaters open and the entire 40% coming from the US it would be a lot more worrisome for theater chains but as it is I really don't think much can be gleaned past the fact that Disney doesn't have to share theater splits w/the D+ rentals.

Disney should be just as concerned. For a Marvel film to come $3M under Passion of the Christ (unadjusted) should be concerning for the franchise
BW only tops 4 other Marvel films on opening weekends. And those were all intro films of Marvel characters: Thor, Ant Man, Cap America, Hulk. BW is well established at this point

They made at least $25m in the US on D+ rentals, 19% of theaters are still closed, and plenty of people are still not willing to go to big group settings like theaters b/c of the pandemic. Black Widow opened just fine. It just had the biggest theatrical opening since the pandemic started.

Eh. How interesting is Black Widow to the average movie goer or even the Marvel fanboy?

That’s true, but Disney is also limiting its pool of movie watchers if they completely bypass theaters.
Anyone know how Regal Unlimited works for studios? Like when I did it, I did a yearly prepay for the service. When I go to see a movie, does my theater/Regal share any revenue with the studio or am I completely excluded from that box office number?

uhhhh, why are there no numbers for those bottom 4 Marvels that I listed? Oh thats right it wasnt an option back then
BW isnt a draw. Its out of order in the timeline. And people are looking for something to do, outside of their former prisons
While they still can

Just ask them politely to be quiet.
Everyone in the theater not an a-hole will be on your side. If they say anything other than "I'm sorry", go get staff to handle it.

So much for get woke go broke, they get woke they rolling in money. I guess linking it to the ME too movement was a great PR move.

I’m a Marvel fan and have little interest in seeing Black Widow. Especially since she’s not part of the franchise going forward.
So odd to do a prequel on a character after her death scene in a previous film.
