Box office will be interesting for this one.

DC’s BIRDS OF PREY is set to feast on the bones of the box office next weekend as it perches on 4,100+ theaters.

Will the riot girls tear the roof off similar to SHAZAM ($53M), AQUAMAN ($67M) or JOKER ($96M)???

What say you?

I'm definitely curious. I'm guessing $40-45 million.

I feel like it depends on the reviews. If they're strong reviews then I see it doing really well at the box office. I mean it's not like Harley is some unknown character. She's extremely popular. I think the marketing for this movie has been awful though.

If this really is the Deadpool for the DCEU then they should advertise it as such

Had one of the best marketing campaigns I've ever seen.

No one knows how to market movies like this. If you have the women interacting with each other too much, execs thing they won't be able to entice the football crowd. If they focus too much on the action, they think they'll alienate the female demographic that they need to bring in to make this thing a legitimate hit. So the whole campaign feels like a compromise that is ineffective for everyone.

I obviously have no idea how to create the right balance, and people on places like this are going to bitch about it no matter what. (not saying your comment was bitching)

It's gotten to the point where I think any movie with universal praise from "critics" is pure garbage. I almost always wait and rent those.

Don't be ridiculous. There are worse threads for that.

It's more about Birds of Prey having the same style of reviews and buzzwords that the usual suspects have used to blow smoke up the arse of terrible female centered movies that bombed with audiences.

I'm going to check this movie out because I'm a sucker for Margot Robbie but I have very low expectations for this movie thanks to these critics.

"Good" and "interesting" were always added to the qualifiers, bud

Nobody was saying they need JUST original films with women. They have to be interesting and good, too.

Right? It’s literally supposed to be an adaptation of a kick arse 90s all-girl superhero team.

If people are dropping that it’s DC’s Deadpool, I’ll check it out.
It is a sequel/spin-off to a terrible movie.

That is where most, if not all, of the trepidation comes from

This.

Robbie isn’t bad as Harley, but her character was hurt by Leto’s Joker and the shittiness of Suicide Squad.

The only thing that slightly redeems this movie some, IMO, is that it is rated R.

Let’s be honest. The roster for this Birds of Prey doesn’t even make sense going by the comics. They really would have been better off just doing a straight Quinn movie.

Team ups without any prior character buildup are doomed to fail.

X-Men disproves that.

Because they will never be satisfied and it leads to shite like this

Not really a team-up, per se. It's an already established team.

And even then, the original movie focused on Logan/Rogue and Prof X/Magneto. The rest of the characters were ancillary and didn't really matter.

True, but they weren't allowed to use Catwoman or Barbara Gordon. Those characters are reserved for Matt Reeves films.

The film X-Men were not an established team. We didn't see a second of any of them in a prior film. No backstory going in.

No backstory on Black Widow before her team-up with Iron Man. That worked well enough.

Hawkeye shows up in Avengers with no previous backstory.

Justice League and Suicide Squad didn't fail with this board because they lacked prequels. If you had 20 individual films leading up to those two movies they would still be on the M/TV's worst superhero movies list.

It's about story, direction, editing. The Russo brothers could make a Defenders or Champions movie tomorrow and it would be great.

I get that. I just don’t see why they felt the need to use that name. It’s not like the main audience it’s targeting is going to be drawn in by that name.

The Emancipation of HQ sounds just fine.

The X-Men were the most popular superhero team in all of literature, by the time the movie was made. . .and yet they DID give you a solid background of the team when Logan showed up at the mansion.

Birds of Prey is mostly remembered as a TV show from the 2002.

The individual characters are more well known individually. A small percentage of comics fans would identify them as members of that group.

Go to any comic book fan in the worlds and do word association with Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, etc.

You will hear them say "X-Men"

Just as they would have said before the movie.

Do the same with Canary, Huntress, Oracle, and Harley. . .

. . .you will hear "Green Arrow, Batman, Batman, Joker", respectively.

Birds of Prey are not an readily known established team within popular culture
