I'll make it a bit of a reach and nominate the Sergeant (played by R Lee Ermy) from Full Metal Jacket.
These were 18 year olds fresh out of high school that he toughened with the force of his will and the strength of his body so that fewer would die in combat. He was the most important teacher in most of those boys' lives.
