What would the recourse be if they didn't read them and just said that they actually wanted? Surely they wouldn't be punished right?

That’s why my interest in the show has died, because I know how much production and the DR interferes and feeds them information. The fun I had with the show is that I thought everyone in the house was ignorant as to what is going on and production would interfere only in emergencies (like Victoria getting sick in season 16). When I heard that the DR actually told nick the name six shooters, that just made me realize how ridiculously scripted the show is as well. I first realized this in season 19 when production tried so hard to make sure Paul had the biggest advantage he could have

I’m assuming they do it so they get more DR sessions on the show and therefore more tv time.

They do. I doubt production would hold their money from them for refusing to read DR fed lines. For Tommy he wants publicity. Cliff does it for AFP.
We’re in desperate need of a “back to basics” season with real players, no twists and little to no interference from anyone.
These people are mildly retarded when it comes to understanding how this game should work. Why would you ever say this to someone in this game?
