I mean look, there's really only two answers here... And we've already seen the first one with 2001.

The other, and I would say is just as good (and I'm this coming from an unabashed Kubrick fanboy) is:

And they're really called match cuts I think.

A segue I think of as more like a transition, similar the cross fade edit in The Godfather where the film overlaps after the horse head and just holds on Don Vito's face for a second as he smiles and greets Tom Hagan.. As if to show that this "kind and gentle" old man is a ruthless killer.

Pure art. The symbolism behind that shot is genius in its conception, and I’m not talking the everyday usage of “genius.” I mean “comes along once in a hundred years” genius.

I've been thinking of something that comes close to the 2001 segue and I think I have a winner.

How about Neo waking up from the power plant:

Neo: Welcome To The Real World

When I first saw this in the theaters it confused the hell out of me

from the very opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. You see the old veteran in the cemetery and the segue to Tom Hanks in the Higgins boat ready to storm the beach at Normandy. Throughout the whole movie you assume the vet was Hanks but the last segue from Matt Damon to the vet is awesome.

The Departed. I just thought Marty was not going to do any opening credits. 20 minute later...
