The Crow was legit. Was at the height of the grunge movement. Could also include Singles in the same vane, although the Crow was darker.

I'd give a vote up to Purple Rain.

Two movie soundtracks also worth mentioning are Pump up the Volume & Singles.

Boogie Nights

Listened to that soundtrack for years.

But it got me thinking...Directors we love like PTA and QT have phenomenal soundtracks.

This brings me to a point. Sometimes, are we obscured when we rate Directors for a movie when a soundtrack dominates the movie?

Boogie Nights uses music like it was dialogue. It starts almost every scene...and great songs are in the backdrop of every scene. QT does the same but not nearly to the degree of Paul Thomas Anderson.

You know who started this?...a shitty director in hindsight.

Movies didn't use to be so music centric to set the scene. They were backdrop to dialogue that was front and center.

George Lucas and American Graffitti - the entire movie is like a long album...with quirky dialogue in between and some action scenes.

Good music can mask a lot of deficiences. American Graffitti is a classic but it's probably because we love the two CD disc soundtrack. The dialogue and story isn't anything special.

Certain movies really benefit from a great soundtrack...and certain Directors know that's an easy way out of story-telling.

I think Lucas sort of always knew he sucked at dialogue and storytelling with the camera...and when he couldn't rely on music, he used SFX...as a crutch like he used music.
