The Hobbit doesn't qualify.

I submit Better Call Saul...

If Godfather 2 counts, i'd put it above TGTBTU. Those are two of the best movies of all time, much less prequels.

Does Batman Begins count? Bc thats up there.

Also, Monsters U.

TV show give me THE MUPPET BABBIES baby. Dont hate. Dont even think about hating.

Personally, I'd tighten the meaning a bit to be specific and say it's specifically a movie made to literally jump start an already made "sequel." To me, that rules out TGTBTU (which would be my #1) - while a prequel the consequences of each film aren't reliant on one another really and The Godfather Part 2, which is essentially a sequel, regardless of flashback structure.

I'd want to do strict Hobbit, Star Wars Phantom Menace, etc. and I'd probably say....

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

In terms of being a true prequel, it's the best one we've ever seen made. Straight up.

Not really a prequel. It’s a reboot.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the best prequel.

Yeah I guess it's pretty tenuous as well, I wasn't thinking of Conquest. Oh well. I'd say Begins, Casino Royale etc. are also not prequels. ANd I still stand by TGTBTU and GP2 as really weak prequels.

That leaves....Phantom Menace?

Temple of Doom deserves a mention.

The Hobbit and Prometheus are both light years ahead of Phantom Menace

The first movie that I was say is Star Trek: First Contact where the Enterprise returns to the time where the Humans meet the Vulcans for the first time...

Does that count?

If not then I would say: Babylon 5: In the Beginning

Because it was released in 1937, while LOTR was released in the 1950s....? While the movies are out of sync, the Hobbit was written as the beginning to the Middle Earth Mythos.

Not retrofitted to the mythos.

The Hobbit movies are still telling a story that is not a prequel story to the LOTR.
