BBC diversity chief says Idris Elba's TV detective Luther 'isn't black enough to be real'

The BBC's diversity chief has claimed Idris Elba's TV detective Luther 'isn't black enough to be real' because 'he doesn't have any black friends and doesn't eat any Caribbean food'.
Miranda Wayland said the hit crime drama, which won plaudits for having a strong, black lead character, was only superficially diverse and that corporation bosses are now looking to portray minority groups in a more convincing and rounded way.

However, Ms Wayland told the MIPTV conference this week that to achieve true representation, TV chiefs must ensure black characters have an environment and culture built around them that is completely reflective of their background.
She said: 'When [Luther] first came out everybody loved the fact that Idris Elba was in there — a really strong, black character lead.
'We all fell in love with him. Who didn't, right? But after you got into about the second series you got kind of like, OK, he doesn't have any black friends, he doesn't eat any Caribbean food, this doesn't feel authentic.'
Casting more black directors was only part of the solution, she added, but Luther's creator and writer Neil Cross expressed surprise, insisting that Elba only took the role in the first place because race was not considered important to the character.
Mr Cross, who is white, said: 'I have no knowledge or expertise or right to try to tackle in some way the experience of being a black man in modern Britain.

It emerged last year that BBC bosses discuss diversity in 'every conversation' about new programmes and the issue is 'non-negotiable'.
The corporation has said it would spend £100million of its content budget on diverse programming over three years, following protests from Black Lives Matter activists this summer.

I’ll let Idris Elba make the decision.

I just love how we’ve returned to open racism towards everyone.

This stuff is so nuts. So to be black one has to have more black friends and eat "culturally black food?"
I mean, that's legitimately racism right?

Well, that's pretty racist.

So it's racist that Elba wasn't racist enough?
Leftists are a scourge upon this Earth.

Jamaicans love oxtails and smothered greens. If they showed Luther eating this on screen, people would cry racism too.

I for one blame Ja Rule. When is he gonna speak out?

I'd bet money that the vast majority of black people don't eat "Caribbean food."

Good lord this country is so soft...oh wait

He's right. Then his diversity boss goes on with some terrible stereotypes that she thinks should be included on how she thinks black people should act, even though she has no idea.

Hate to break it to her, but people don't love watching shows/movies with Idris Elba because he's black. It's because he's really good at what he does.

I'd bet most black folks don't eat Caribbean food either. And, they definitely don't just eat Caribbean food.

So their solution to making Luther more authentic is letting him smoke ganja and changing the soundtrack to ska?

British show. A large chunk of the black people over there are Jamaican since it was a Commonwealth country.

Also, wasn't the point of Luther that in the first or second episode of the series, he goes home late at night, after being at work all day, pops open like a pathetic can of beans, then barely gets a nap and goes back out at night to show that he doesn't really care about food, or sleep, and cares only about doing his job?
Luther sitting at home cooking an intense array of carribean foods is not what I consider the character Luther to be. he is, obviously, obsessive about police work and doing the right thing. Caring about food is trivial to him.

yes. that was my original, real response to this
"Luther didn't have friends or eat much"
quote:
Caring about food is trivial to him.
but you see, THIS is an example of white supremacy. we shouldn't be forcing our BIPOC actors and actresses to portray white face and promote white supremacist culture like this. all BIPOC characters should celebrate everything about their culture so that BIPOC consumers can feel welcome and encouraged to love themselves and reject white supremacy
