Last night, my phone was dead and I do t have internet so I was watching the bunny ears channel and I came across a channel that showed old tv shows and they had a tv show I've never seen before. Barney Miller

Watched a couple of episodes last night and it was very watchable. It actually had some grit to it while the charctwrs remained flawed but likable. The old Asian guy is something else!

Has anyone seen more of this show? Can they add input?

Yeah it's a great classic show.

It was always on re-runs in the 80's.

On an episode last night, that guy was angry because he paid an ancestry service and as far back as they could go, his ancestors were from England.

It's a smart show for its time. Considering Three's Company was dominating the dial.

Its like Night Court for cops but more serious.

It's a very unique show. Has some WKRP in it too.

But that's just grasping for straws. Barney Miller is and was a unique show, I can't compare it beyond cursory comparisons.

wojahowitz is great, i think he and the asian guy carried that show.

its a bit dated for a simpler time but better then most of the new shows they have on tv now

the old original hawaii 5 0 shows are great for binge watching, much better then the new show

Loved when it was on ABC. Dietrich is my favorite character now. Wasn't my favorite at the beginning, but he grew on me. Fish was great too.

Wojciehowicz was my favorite character in the 70's, when I was a teenager. I remember hearing Max Gail, who played him, was living in the desert in a tepee at one time trying to find himself, or whatever 35 year olds did in the 70's.

There wasn’t a weak character on the show. Fish (Abe Vigoda) was hilarious. Dietrich was probably the funniest to me though. He had such a dry sense of humor.

Really great show. Hal Linden (Barney Miller) really was the glue to that show. He play a great straight man to the group of crazies in the precinct.

Really worth a watch if it is on one of the streaming services.

Wojo’s girlfriend makes some brownies. One of the funniest episodes ever.

Get your hands on Season 4. It’s the season where Fish and Dietrich are both in the cast, and before Yamana passes away.

The series never got bad. The creator pulled the plug as soon as he thought that they were about to get repetitive.

Sitcoms were like that in the 1970s - gritty, more realistic (at least compared to 50s/60s sitcoms those shows were reacting to.)

And, you had some fine actors and writing for Barney Miller. If you watch the whole thing, about the biggest problem was their acting cadre for guest stars get cycled through as different characters - nothing inherently wrong with that, but it hurts with suspension of belief. On the other hand, they also had some recurring characters that are just top flight. In particular, the great James Gregory with probably his best character ever - Inspector Luger shows up from time to time, kind of functions as a foil for Barney (old friend, mentor and technically a superior officer).

But, the main cast, even as it changed over time was solid from a comic timing and general acting ability.

My granddad and I watched BM during the early 80’s. There was this one character who was trying to make detective but never got promoted iirc

The uni? Corporal Levitt?

Played by the late, great Ron Carey. Worked in many of Mel Brooks' films.

In the final episode, Inspector Luger lets Levit know that he is now Detective Levit. He also lets him know that he had been intentionally agrivating him by calling him Levine, Lewis, etc. over the years. The insinuation was that Luger just loved playing an ongoing joke on someone he cared for.

In addition to all of the show's other strengths, it had the best bass line of any TV theme music in history.
