I never said it would flop. I just said I didn't care.

Also, foreigners ate this shite up last time, and they will again.

Who is saying this? There is no reason to expect this to flop. Not saying it's going to be good, but it's definitely going to rake in the cash.

Edit: *I mean, who cannot get fatigued with repetitive sequels about these goody-two-shoes blue aliens that have no moral faults because they're "at one" with nature?

Have you seen any Marvel movies? Thor 4, which people weren't even excited about and should have already ended, got terrible ratings, and still made 760 million at the box office.

If this movie sucks, then yea, it'll not be good for the ones after (I didn't even know they had others planned). But the 1st one wasn't that good and people ate it up like candy. And it was people from all age groups too. A guy I worked with at the time was like 40, and he saw it in theatres 5 times. It was insane. The numbers show how much people loved the 1st one. Even one mediocre movie isn't going to tank the love for this franchise, much less have minimal profit margins.

Honest question, because I'm trying to think of one, can you think of a franchise that originally was one of the higher grossing movies ever and by the 3rd installment had marginal profits or was a flop? Nothing is coming to mind for me.

That $760 million was considered a disappointment. The MCU got to 20 or so movies without fatigue because they handled the build up excellently. Cameron is coming at us very fast with 4 sequels in 8 years of a franchise that has no concrete cultural impact other than the theme park ride element of the 3D.

Maybe audiences will be game for a return to the spectacle of the 3D for the first new Avatar in 13 years. But when Avatar movies become a dime-a-dozen after Avatar 3: Back to the Trees and Avatar 4: The Quest for More Money, I don’t see how audience buzz will sustain.

The Matrix Revolutions
Superman 3

Edit: I would include Jurassic Park 3, but they seem to have anticipated its box office decline (which makes one wonder why they made it) when they made It 30 minutes shorter and $30 million cheaper than the next cheapest JP movie at the time. But still, very telling that a JP movie at the time couldn’t even make $350 million.

Word of mouth is going to get people in theaters to see this. There’s nothing in theaters right now. Not sure how much it’ll make, but it’s definitely not going to be a major flop.

Exactly. The first one was actually kind of political but that was the old Hollywood political where they didn't shove the SJW stuff down your throat like they did in Star Wars. Just a good old fashioned Dancing With Wolves politics, which no one really complained about.

It was a huge reason to own a blu-ray player and Full HD TV, movie was absolutely gorgeous.

i only watched the first Avatar because of the 3d gimmick which was brand new thing back in 2009.

well, 3d movies are long since dead and i have zero interest in watching this.

I can't believe there are 3 more movies planned.

What's the break-even point?

Some are saying $2 Billion, which sounds like a high estimate to me The budget is between 400-600 Million, and generally you break even at 2.5x or 3x.

So even assuming the highest costs and higher than normal break even metrics, $2 Billion seems like an exaggeration.

I'd guess it's closer to $1.5 Billion

Got our tickets to IMAX 3D on Saturday night. I expect a shallow story with amazing visuals.

Who really cares about B.O. sales? Everyone knew it would rake in the Chinese market.

I just don't see the appeal domestically unless you're the type of person who likes to listen to Dark Side of the Moon while watching Wizard of Oz.

Now that weed is legal in most States, maybe there's an audience.

But people ran to the theaters first go around for the hype and technology.

I don't see the desire to go back and basically watch an extended version of the first movie. I think people hope it fails so it finally puts the nail in coffin of catering to the Chinese market but that won't happen.
