At what point during your first viewing of The Phantom Menace did you realize it sucked?

My 11 year old self was giddy going to Phantom of the Menace in theaters. I thought the opening scene was badass. Finally, multiple Jedi in action showing all their powers! Even after Qui Gon used Jar Jar to get to Gungan City I thought was great.

It wasn’t until that fateful decision where Qui Gon decided to honor his life debt to Jar Jar that I realized fricking Binks would be around the whole movie.

Qui Gon singlehandedly sunk the prequels by saving Jar Jar, even my 11 year old self realized it at that time it was over.

It was solidified during Anakin and Padme’s first talk on Tattoine that we were fricked.

i was whipped and had my star wars glasses on for the first few viewings. I saw it 7 times in the theater, and about the 4-5th time i started noticing.

Now its cringe worthy. The acting and dialogue is so wooden and stale.

It probably took me a about a year. I wanted to like it too much to admit it sucked.

IV and V are the only good ones IMO. Even Jedi was just ok.

Pod-Racing was pure cringe.

The capper was when they killed Darth Maul.

As soon as I realized the entire movie was CGI on par with A Bug’s Life

The original Jedi would've been much better. That's when Lucas decided to maximize marketing for kids instead of making the best possible movie.

I really like Jedi. I think the original 3 are well above the others.

I knew a guy who was friends with someone who worked at the theater and he watched it in an empty theater before the crowds came in.

I asked him the next day at work and he said:

"Oh, my god, as soon as it ended I asked him to play it again and we watched it again."

Then I saw the movie and realized this was just blind Star Wars nostalgia.

Everyone tried SO HARD to like it. From the get go, people lied to themselves.

I think as soon as Jar Jar appears, most people just sort of slightly sighed and said frick, these movies are gonna suck.

I don't remember if it was the first time I realized it, but the scene with Anakin in the starfighter on Naboo stands out as incredibly stupid. Anything with Jar Jar in it is too easy.

I was bored with the majority of the film. The only part I loved was the lightsabre battle.

Honestly the moment they went to the Gungan underwater city I was like this doesn’t look anything like Star Wars.

It was early on, but the whole thing had been pretty much green screen CGI at that point, and that didn’t change throughout the movie except for Anakin’s home on Tatooine, and even that was filled with CGI Sebulba and pod racing.

That was always my biggest problem with the prequels. I can deal with the cheesy dialogue, the bad acting, even the fricking midochlorians. The original trilogy had plenty of that stuff.

But this just felt like a completely different “galaxy” and no connection at all to the movies we wanted more of.

Either Jar Jar or the pod race.

Felt like nothing but a push to sell toys.

Yep. It didn't have the darkness and suspense that Empire had.

Phantom Menace and Clone Wars are average popcorn flicks. They “suck” only in relation to the hype surrounding them due to the 15 years of pent up fanboy frustrations.

Jar Jar was terrible, the pod racing was a flop and Natalie Portman as Padme is arguably the most miscast role in major movie history. The movie has its moments though. The opening scene is great and the epic ending lightsaber battle is, IMO, one of the best parts of the entire franchise (at least until Maul gets cut in half).

Revenge of the Sith is actually pretty decent IMO. It would be downright good without the Padme/Anikin scenes.
