Rome was amazing. I still have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD somewhere...but I actually did a rewatch not too long ago. Great series with a lot of historical accuracy surrounding the main characters.

My number 1 series I wish was not canceled. I can't re-watch because it makes me sad.
I think the background events of historical Rome greatly diminished after the fall of Caesar and the rise of Augustus. Augustus brought Rome to its greatest prominence but it wasn't sustained after he passed.
So maybe that along with the budget restraints were main factors.

Rome was great at first
But the way they rushed the ending ruined it

Sustained? Ever heard of Trajan?

Binged to episode 4 last night. Really enjoying it so far.
One question that's not relevant to the story at all. Why didn't that servant girl just hop on the carriage of gold instead of walking with it for what looked like miles and miles of grueling speed of 1 mph?

Well, Theocoles was somewhat embellished at least

All we really know about the historical Spartacus comes from the Roman campaigns against him and they got a lot of that wrong. All the details about Spartacus and his lieutenants were entirely fictional other than their names but they can claim accuracy because there's no evidence to disprove. No one knows if Spartacus was really Thracian. Or even if he was the overall leader of the uprising.
We do know that Julius Caesar was in the East fighting pirates and played no part in the Third Servile War. We know a great deal about Caesar and Marcus Crassus and those characterizations were absurdly bad.

I feel the same way. Every time I am picking an old HBO, Max or Show series to rewatch I consider it but just know it will piss me off.

One scene that always stuck with me from Rome was Cicero’s death. It’s just a great scene. Well written, well acted, and well shot.

Bump. Just finished a re watch for the first time in years. Both seasons are still excellent and hold up very well. The acting is some of the best of any HBO show I've ever watched. The kid that played young Octavian and James Purefoy as Mark Antony were scene stealers.

Other than its short life span, I think the only thing that irritated me about Rome was their choice for the Cleopatra actress. I was a college aged horndog and wanted someone a lot hotter in that role than the chick they cast.
This just didn't do it for me at the time...now I'd hit it no question

The only part I don't like is the lack of seeing full battles but I understand the series is more of the drama.
They may not have done big battle scenes, but I always thought the early battle scene showing the machine like operation of the legion in action (until drunken Pullo decided to go one on one) was awesome, and probably one of the more accurate depictions of ancient warfare.

Probably an attempt at historical accuracy tbh:
quote:
Roman propaganda painted Cleopatra as a debauched temptress who used her sex appeal as a political weapon, but she may have been more renowned for her intellect than her appearance. She spoke as many as a dozen languages and was educated in mathematics, philosophy, oratory and astronomy, and Egyptian sources later described her as a ruler “who elevated the ranks of scholars and enjoyed their company.”
There’s also evidence that Cleopatra wasn’t as physically striking as once believed. Coins with her portrait show her with manly features and a large, hooked nose, though some historians contend that she intentionally portrayed herself as masculine as a display of strength.
For his part, the ancient writer Plutarch claimed that Cleopatra’s beauty was “not altogether incomparable,” and that it was instead her mellifluous speaking voice and “irresistible charm” that made her so desirable.
