re: Anyone believe we are seeing the beginning of the end of the movie theaters?

I mean there's the option of not buying anything from the concession stand. It's how I've mostly done movies my whole life. I love popcorn, but I'm not paying $10 for a small bag of it.

Never understood that complaint. The theaters are pretty lenient about you bringing snacks in. We bring jackets with us even in the hottest weather. Bottle in one pocket and snacks in the other. Besides, the theaters in Baton Rouge have shitty popcorn.

Everybody has 65+" T.V.'s and streaming services. Who needs to go to movie theaters?

Does Hollywood win or lose with more of these movies going into the home?
I think in the end it will be a huge win for Hollywood. If you have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc all in a bidding war for blockbuster Hollywood movies to me that's what Hollywood should want.
Now for that to happen Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc have to figure out how to make it worth it to pay a billion dollars for the rights to show something like Avengers: Endgame. I mean would the added monthly subscriptions do the trick.....I'd probably say no. Netflix has what in the area of 160 million subscribers right now and I'd imagine maybe 200 million people watched Endgame. There will probably start to be some type of rental service for those hits before general release for streaming.
It's a risk for Hollywood and the streamers but I think it is coming sooner rather than later.

I think that's every movie theater these days.

What is the value proposition for a theater? Screen size and sound system experience. The end.
All other facets of the home is better from concessions, drinks, booze, cost, bathroom breaks, convenience.
Theater will never die until technology Catches up at home for a competitive price (make home theater systems super affordable).
I can make a better steak at home than I get in a restaurant, I can get better viewing angles for football games on my big TV (I can't follow the team up and down the field in a stadium etc).
But there are aspects of "going out" around other people, that make it a more memorable experience.
Theaters need to refocus and make it a "going out" experience again.

Nooooooooo....not for the last 5 years.
They banned backpacks and even purses. So the days of packing homemade popcorn, sodas or a sandwich for a movie Marathon are over.
They realized how much money they were losing by us sneaking in food.
That's the real death of theaters. It ain't the 1980s. If people can't sneak in snacks, no movie Marathon.

Where do you live where they don’t allow jackets or purses in the theater?

Dreadful movie-going West Coast
fricking Cinemark banned bags and search people sometimes. I had a movie theater not let me in because I had a small backpack.
Which is barely a woman's purse these days. So your date or wife is screwed.
Literally have to take them back to your car. AMC is cool though.

Theaters around here don't really care what you bring in as long as you're not blatant with it. There usually not even a ticket taker after the box office. Maybe that's because I usually hit the afternoon matinee on weekdays though. Can't remember the last time I went to see a movie on a Friday or Saturday night.

That’s a great idea! I’d definitely go to the movies if they had a schedule like:
Monday-Westerns
Tuesday-70s/80s
Wednesday-war movies
Thursday’s-classics
and so forth
A lot of those smaller ones already do this. Basically theme nights. I love them. I remember them doing a Back to the Future night and people dressed up like the characters. This was a few years ago too. I think they'll just starting pushing out themed nights like this, and then highly discriminate against the type of mainstream movies they'll show.
Dinner and a movie combined is fun too. I like the idea of eating while I'm watching.

A ton of movies these days have >$100 million budgets. (That’s more than twice the average movie budget for 1995 adjusted for inflation.) With that much money put into projects, studios do two things
1) rehash established IP that is guaranteed to sell
2) push out creative talent and hire studio yes men to be the equivalent of TV show runners to direct creative output - Kevin Fiege at Marvel, Alex Kurtzmen with Star Trek, etc.
...if studios felt the crunch and felt that they had to lower production budgets, they may feel more comfortable hiring more interesting storytellers to craft more original content.

If you aren't measuring your screen in feet instead of inches, it's not home theater.

Yep. That is why I swing by Walmart or Target to grab my candy.

No you said this:

A big part of the reason for this is the movie studios generally take up to 90% of the ticket money so concessions is where the theater has to make their money.
Theaters generally get anywhere from 45-55% of the total box office cut. Regal got smart and said we’ll charge you $20 a month instead and let you see every movie you want, so instead of paying for your tickets each month we’ll let you spend money on concessions with 10% off.
Works for me.

I hope so.
Hope it becomes a novelty where its $50 a ticket, hopefully that way no one will talk in the theaters.

I haven't been to a movie theater since 2003.
