Not sure if this is a spoiler:

The comet that first appears in the prologue to CoKs seems to signify the birth of the dragons. Its not mentioned in GoT.

Until you get to the 4th and 5th books, everything generally happens in the order of the chapters.

There's a dream sequence when Ned is in the black cells that is hugely important in understanding what is going on.

I believe that was shown in the series. I did not read that far in the book but I remember Ned having the fat eunuch visit him in his cell and recommend he yield to the king.

Yeah, they show him in the cell but they don't show him dreaming about important past events.

The one I'm speaking of wasn't. The ToJ dream. Its really the only opportunity to see King Robert's Rebellion from Ned's POV.

It may have been a fever dream after his injury from the confrontation with Jaime, rather than in the black cells.

I got interested in the books after the first season. I'm now into the 3rd book and look forward to season 2 even more.

I want to read these books but when i started the first i was bored because i had already finished season one of the show.

I might read the second book and just record the show but can anyone tell me if i missed anything in the first book that wasn't on the TV show? I don't feel like reading the first book already knowing what happens.

Like everybody is saying in the thread; prophecies, dreams, flashbacks. People that have just watched the show really are only getting the bare bones. If you just watch the show then start COK, I really think you will be lost.

SPOILER - What is written below is a theory based almost entirely on AGOT material, but if you ever plan to read the first book and want to go in completely fresh, I wouldn't read it.

People that just watched the show probably assume Ned and Wylla are Jon's parents while the book hints strongly that Jon is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryan. Hell, most people who just watched the show might not even be sure of who Lyann Stark is.

i came across that whole thing and i spoiled it for myself before reading. didn't bother me. anyway, I thought it was interesting that in Jon's 1st POV that he mentions that the boy conqueror Targaryen was his hero.

it's a matter of personal preference. But IMO by watching the show first you're getting a watered down version and spoiling the superior medium. Plot twists in the books w/ all the background provided are always going to trump what the TV show provides

I would read all of the books. What would you rather? A season of shows spoil a 800-1,000 page book, or a book spoil a season of shows?

The book is the author's vision, the TV show is it being formatted to TV. So IMO its best to read it the way you were to perceive it, then rehash it on the series.

That said, I read all the books after I saw the first season. Also, I have never seen a TV show so close to the book, for the most part the books are the script.

Either way you are going to spoil one or the other.

No guarantee that the show stays on the air long enough to get to every book, and no promises that Martin will live long enough to finish the series.

They weren't paying attention at all if this is the case.

I watched season 1 and then read the book last week. I am glad that I waited and will probably wait until season 2 is over before reading the second book.

So, do the maester's wear chains in the show? I just watched a scene with Pycelle talking to a whore and he didn't have his chain on.

From what the previews show of Season 2, they assemble some plots of SOS into the COK series.

I watched the first season before I read the first book and HBO does the book justice but you don't see all the prophecies. I'm on book 5 now and they're all awesome

I seem to remember him donning his chains after he gets dressed to leave his apt.

being a grand maester he would wear symbols of all the various arts he had mastered.
