If there's a villain in the film aside from Potter it's Uncle Billy. He was nothing more than a nepotistic empty salary who despite co-founding the B&L couldn't be trusted to run it after Peter died and had to instead be wetnursed by his twentysomething nephew. He's the one who freaked out and closed up during the bank run, and who lost the $8,000 that led to George's breakdown.

frick Uncle Billy.

when George has his breakdown and leaves the house in anger, SHE is the one who kick-starts and spearhead the fundraising campaign in town that saves the Building & Loan.
this is the part that always gets me - he blows up at the family and storms out of the house and she reacts with love and concern instead of anger.

He had his plans, Mary had her plans...she won out and then in the end he won out because she was persistent. He thought the chance of a lifetime was to leave, travel...she turns out to be the chance of a lifetime.

It's a very Christian message. We all have our plans for what we want to do in life but then God laughs at our plans.

There's a great story from the set of IAWL where Lionel Barrymore liked Donna Reed but didn't believe her Iowa farm girl shtick given how elegant and beautiful she was. There was a dairy cow on set, so he bet her $50 she couldn't milk it. She walked right over and started milking it, then walked back over to LB and said "easiest $50 I ever made."

The other is that she actually did break the window in the scene where she and George are throwing rocks at the old house.

quote:

In the iconic scene of It’s a Wonderful Life where Mary and George walk home from the dance together, the two throw rocks through the windows of an old house and make wishes. Capra originally hired a marksman to shoot the window out (instead of making Donna Reed hit the window). But no marksman was needed; the cast and crew were amazed when Reed broke the window by throwing the rock herself. The Iowa girl had a trick up her sleeve (and a strong arm in that sleeve): Reed was a baseball player back in high school

She was beautiful and athletic. The total package.

Yes, the assumption is Violet Bick was the skank who would not doubt be a freak in the sheets, but Mary would have done anything for George, and I mean anything.

Disagree. Violet came from a troubled home. She coped by being “loose”.

But she was not a skank. Just a abused girl pleading for love and attention.

Yeah but she's also the one who volunteered their wedding money to tide people over til the bank reopened.

Wonder what the a-hole did with his $242?

Here’s something I just now noticed last night. The $242 a-hole guy was the first to come in and make a donation at the end.
