I've heard this before, but never paid attention.
I'm a big Kaufman fan and if this turns out to be true, I really don't know how I would react.

1. Pissed because he did it and was depraved of his talent for 20+ years.

2. Amazed he pulled it off for so long and can't wait for the first live interview to see if it really him.

3. Astounded with the greatest troll move ever.

Tony Clifton

So in reading some of this I learned that the whole Tony Clifton persona was created at my workplace. Probably in the same little theater I'm always seeing free shows in. I know, csb.

That would be awesome if it was true. It really seems like something Andy Kaufman would do.

ETA: I haven't watched wrestling since high school, but I would pay money to see Andy and Jerry Lawler in the ring one more time.

That's good because he wasn't a comedian

No? People sure treated him like one. Laughed at him all the time, at his antics. Why did he do the shite he did if he wasn't trying to be funny? Other than the obvious "he was a nutjob" answer?

He was a performer, not a comedian in the classic sense. Like a Weird Al Yankovic.

WTF? Terrible comparison IMO.

Kaufman did things to be funny, annoying, abrasive, offensive, shocking, etc. A performer is definitely what he was, and while it could be argued that some things he did were funny, most of them were entertaining (even if only to him).

Performance artist, maybe? I don't know if that's a real term for people. Sounds pretentious.

Kaufman was definitely pretentious...or at least his persona was.

He liked to go to colleges and just get on stage sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall. The crowd would boo like crazy. Then he would stop at 4 bottles. Then they (those who were left) would go crazy for him to finish the song. He wasn't a comedian. He was a performance troll.
