i've actually been a fan for a long time. The only time i haven't watched was the niki minaj, mariah carey season.

But, the first auditions were unwatchable. Luke Bryan teaching someone range ? senile Lionel sending the guy back outside to warm up.

Katy insisting that all eyes be on her.

the JLo,Urban,Connick judge group was the best.

My wife and I have always been fans. I did not like the Niki years either. I personally think the best judges were the first ones. When Simon was on there, it gave a different feel to it. Plus Randy Jackson was great. The show has really become PC. Simon brought the sword at times. There are just times in life where you need someone to tell you that you suck and that something is terrible. Not try to let you down slowly.

The show is also starting to "set up" these sob stories too much. The garbage guy yesterday was just sappy. If the story is real, which none of us know it is, then its a good story and they should have just let it play out and not try to make it 10 times bigger than it should be.

Things that happen naturally will always have a bigger impact.

Local girl from Destrehan will be on the next show. Faith Becnel. I hope she does well.

I know both the Idol peeps from Louisiana this season. Both her and my boi Jovin Webb, from STA, will be on there next week.

FYI, Jovin Webb’s two bands are both playing the Varsity Theatre in BR this month. His Funk/Soul band Captain Green plays this Friday and his Rock band Bayou Bullets plays the following Saturday (2/29). Two show passes are available on the Varsity’s website for $15 total.

Yeah I was shocked. I would have done something similar to what Katy did. Lionel and Luke were tripping on that one. I don't know what they didn't see in her.

I’m hoping maybe she’ll be one of those that come back at a later audition. Not sure though, she seemed really devastated

Katy is a great personality for the panel. She does legitimately try to connect with the contestants. I love how invested the judges get into the contestants.

For sure. That is the direction this panel has taken, and I actually like it a lot.

Also, if it wasn't for last season I wouldn't know who Alejandro (scarypoolparty) is and that would be a travesty. He's the best artist to come through this show ever, and he wouldn't have gotten the chance to be heard without it.

100%. He should have won last year, but it was funny in the intro when they briefly mentioned Lane “who is really taking off” and then went on and on about Alejandro selling out his tour across the country and becoming a star in the industry

Sure, I should have clarified when I said Luke was becoming my favorite judge, that is always meant aside from Simon. He is the GOAT, no question. In a class all his own

I do like this panel as a whole better though. I never really loved Paula and Randy was just kind of repetitive. They were simply there to set up Simon.

But you’re right, it’s just a different feel now. Some like it, some don’t. I just do.

I like the new direction because you can’t really replicate a Simon. Connick tried and was pretty good, but it wasn’t the same.

Better to just try to do something new. They rarely show the split votes nowadays, which was what Simon did so well. You had to win him over and that was always the suspense.

Now they usually only show people getting through and just telling their stories so we’re more invested as they go through Hollywood week and the live shows.

Again, I like that.

I wouldn’t call it “PC”. It’s just getting to know the characters.

Touchy feely maybe. But not PC.

I think America did Alejandro a favor. Idol would have NEVER let him put out the album he did. It's way too off the beaten path for them. They would have had him doing purely acoustic songs, which he's great at, but we wouldn't have a banger like DIAMONDS.

HFS just saw his audition, that might honestly be the best first performance I’ve ever seen on this show.

Lionel said that is what Barbecue sauce SOUNDS like, Luke said something like this could only come from Louisiana.

Hopefully that wasn’t just a case of a perfect song for his voice but man the soul in his voice was evident from the very first note. Also seems very likable and humble. This could be the real deal

YouTube link to his segment

ETA: Some really good ones last night. The two girls with deeper voices toward the end were really good imo, especially the one at the piano.

Man, that last segment with the married couple from Nashville was an all timer on the emotion meter. shite, that guy stood by her and took care of their kids through an addiction that started due to her pregnancy. What a heartbreaking story.

And she is without a doubt good enough to win the whole thing. Outstanding voice. Going to be rooting for her to go far for sure.

Louisiana Baw, Johnny (Q)West, and Piano Chick are my favorites so far.

When Johnny dropped that rap I howled out loud and scared my wife and kid.

the gay Panthers male cheerleader crushed it.... that was really good.

I was thinking it was gonna be stupid and terrible at first but then he started to sing.

Jovin was great- hate that it took losing his mom for him to sing to showcase his pain and emotion.

I always watch the auditions but not always the remainder of the show. It depends on how invested I feel with some of the contestants. So far, I like the Nepal guy, curious how far he gets. I really like Julia from this past episode; the girl who sang Growing Pains, awesome! The girl who was an addict, really good. The soulful LA boy. Those are a few that stuck out to me.

Y’all have 3 chances to see Jovin sing that sweet sticky smokey goodness in person the next two weeks:
Tonight at the Basin on 3rd Street in Baton Rouge (mostly covers)
Saturday at the Varsity Theatre in BR (mostly originals)
Friday March 6 at Spotlight Bar & Grill in Metairie (3 hr set about 2/3 covers)

FYI, Jovin’s father passed away between when that audition was filmed and when the episode aired.

Oh shite, that sucks. Really wish his dad would have been able to see him and the praise he got.

Play with him? We grew up together from kindergarten through hs. I was at the middle school talent show when he did the Michael Jackson moonwalk to Billy Jean (I hope someone finds a video of that, it was awesome). We were in hs marching band together. Jovin was a drummer, I played trumpet and piano in the pit crew. Jovin’s a good dude. Definitely has that rock star aura on stage now, but it took a lot of work to get there. He used to have a lot of stage fright singing, but has really come into his own over the last couple years. He actually got his start singing with the cover band rewind as a fill-in for their front-man: Durand Jones. Durand Jones & the Indications tour all over the world as a badass soul band, but in hs, Durand also played sax in the St. Amant High School Golden Gator Band.

All roads go back to STA
