Fantastic. Let them burn, then. I'm tired of them using our own fricking media and entertainment as propaganda against us.

Maybe we'll finally get decent Star Wars movies.

People blaming the theaters for the cost of tickets is hilarious.

You want everyone to get paid $12-15 dollar minimum wage? That boosts their overhead.

You want all of the latest high end equipment and seating? More overhead.

You want media companies to merge and drive up the value of your stock portfolio thus enabling them to set outrageous box office receipt sharing terms? That’s why you have expensive concessions.

Smart theaters don’t care what you spend at the box office anymore, which is why those subscription models are taking off. I can pay $20 a month and see however many movies I want AND get a concessions discount? I’ll take it. Theaters love it because they don’t have to share the subscription revenue nor the concessions revenue with the studios.

The concessions are expensive as shite because a theatre chain is a concession selling business.

They make nothing off the movie, the entire operation is made to sell concessions.

All theaters are concession selling businesses that just so happen to show a movie.

I lost the excitement to go to a movie theatre. This doesn’t bother me. I download everything on torrent anyway now

Hopefully it changes the business model, starting with no more 7 or 8 figure paydays for the lead actors.

The biggest problem theaters face in getting profits comes from how the studios screw them in contracts.

Generally speaking the amount the theater gets from each ticket is on a sliding scale based on how long the movie has been out. For example, a theater may get 10% of the ticket price in the first week, then 20% the next week, then 30% after that, etc until the movie's run has ended. Something like Infinity War would have been a massive boon to the theaters whereas something like La La Land may have been a loss.

On top of that studios have been known to add fees, over-allocate to marketing, etc to show their movies have lost money when in fact they haven't (for instance, they may have over-allocated to marketing but it's their own marketing arm sooo... yeah).

On average your US movie theater's profit margin is around 4%.

A far better deal would be for studios to go straight 50% with the theaters. This would allow for not only lower concession prices but also lower ticket prices (which would mean it wouldn't be such an expense to go for many).

AMC was loathe to get into the restaurant/theater business and I've seen a number of posts here of people who haven't tried it complaining about it. This is the trend for the future, but it's not as bad as they fear it is. With that said though, not all theater/restaurants are created equal.

Let's take the IPic theaters as our first example. The price on the tickets is a little higher but your menu has steaks, chicken alfredo, etc and they have an employee stationed in the back of each theater room. That employee isn't just for assistance but to warn people once for being on their phones or talking excessively during the movie. And they take it seriously, I have seen them kick someone out after a single warning (and that warning is posted and plays before a movie).

On the other hand you have something like the Movie Taverns in BR and Juban. While the food selection is more on the level of burgers and pizzas, the service level between the two is night and day but they still do not rise to the IPic level of having someone stationed in the back of each theater to tell people to take it outside or leave.

As to the noise level of people dining, it's non-existent. You're far more likely to be disturbed by the a-hole in front of you with their phone out than you are someone munching a slice of pizza. Also, the recliners and giant-assed drinks in the drink-holders on the armrests can't be beat.

If you're a family of four it's a much better deal than going to the movie theater. Think about it...you're paying roughly $9 a ticket and that adds up to almost $40 just to get your seats. We haven't even started on concessions yet. You add that in and you're paying about $80 just to go to a movie on a Friday night.

What makes you think lead actors are just gonna stop getting their million dollar pay days? Especially those that are huge box office draws

AMC was teetering on the brink of an imminent collapse for years as some have pointed out. This is, I am afraid, hardly shocking news.

A few years ago people were loudly predicting the death of the bookstore, particularly the small indie bookstores, in the face of Amazon. Instead they've been thriving (well until COVID) while major bookstore chains have been going belly up.

The movie theater will still be around, and I expect that out of this we might very well get the return of the local movie theater and we almost certainly get someone like Disney putting their thang down and entering the market.

bullshite. I’ve been to the meal/drink service type theater plenty of times because the AMCs and Regals around here are either too trashy or too far away.

They’re obnoxious as frick and make following deeper movies difficult to follow along to because fat arse Karen and Steve need their fiddy ounce soda, beer, and dinner to enjoy a 2 hour film. frick. That.

We’ve tried them.

Exactly. It’s like going to the drive-in. Fun if you don’t give a shite about the movie and you think the distractions are a part of the atmosphere.

I’ve been to multiple restaurant theaters and unless the the theater is completely empty it’s a shitty experience for any kind of film buff.

This is a good idea actually.

Maybe invest in a big projector and set it up in the backyard. Make some of the cost of the screen back by charging folks in the neighborhood to come watch it. Perhaps you could even sell portioned popcorn or sodas.

If you have enough people wanting to come watch, you could have multiple showings per day. Might have to hire some local teenagers to clean up afterwards.

I see a decent amount in theaters and I've rarely had any issues at all with that kind of stuff. Granted I also rarely see a blockbuster type movie on a friday or saturday night

They remind me of how Blockbuster went down

I can’t tell you the last time I went to an actual theater. They are not keeping up with times

One good thing about my local AMC is that they serve beer and alcohol

They even freaked out about two years ago worried about Concession sales by restricting the size of a backpack or purse that you could bring into the theater...no snacks or cokes in your bag.

Well, if they didn't rape the public at the concession stand like they do, they'd sell more product. No reason in hell a large fountain coke and a box of popcorn should cost anywhere near $12-$14 like they do.

The last time the wife and I went to see a movie at a cinema it was damn near $50 between tickets and the concession stand. Never again.
