AMC Prices seem very high. Have I been checked out of movies too long?

Like most people I barely go to the theater anymore.
I saw the odyssey in full imax at the Smithsonian yesterday. Tickets were $18.
My wife wants to go see it next time and the Smithsonian tickets are all sold out. So we normally go to AMC theaters when we do go. Well I go to book either imax or 70MM tickets at our local AMC and they’re $30 a ticket. I was shocked. Mind you this is also 2-3 weeks after premier as well before we can go. I notice AMC now lists these as premium formats. I check our local regal and it’s $18 albeit in a standard format.
Did AMC just massively jack their prices up recently? I can’t remember ever paying anywhere near this for an IMAX movie or a 70mm movie. My last reference was Oppenheimer in 2023

I mean imax is definitely a premium format 
That seems pretty normal compared to the rest of the market.

Premium screens are pricey. If you can, go on Tuesdays. Tickets are cheaper that day.

I went to Oppenheimer in imax for $21 at the same theater 3 years ago. Seems like an insane price increase.

It's pretty nuts for sure. We do get popcorn and drinks so the whole cost isn't just the tickets but if I have to cut back on the "theater experience" then it's not worth going anymore.

Yes prices are nuts. If it is a great movie I am really interested in, I will go to the cinema and pay the price. Otherwise, I stream it on one of a number of platforms at home.

My AMC is pretty much $15-20 for adults, regardless of time or format.
I go once or twice a year if I can find something I’m interested in when I just want to disappear into a movie theater. Rarely crowded except for like a Star War or some big release.

70mm is premium format.
I have AMC+ and we go to movies free all the time. One movie basically covers the month of costs for the subscriptions. Bring in hot tamales and a superior marg or wine so we don’t have to pay the bar. Cost is fine and worth every penny

To take the kids to Toy Story 5 I bought some AMC yellow tickets which is basically some
Discount codes because you still have to pay the upgrade depending on formats.

Prices are definitely out of hand. $45 for tickets just for my wife and I today.
If it's a movie I really need to see, like The Odyssey, I'll fork over that cash, otherwise it's a $5 Tuesday ticket for me.

We paid $34 per ticket at a Regal 70mm showing of The Odyssey Saturday. 70mm is about as premium as you can get, and remember that is a 70mm analog print with each frame 4 times the area of a typical 35mm analog print. The prints are about $60k each. The 70mm projectors are rare, extremely expensive, and very expensive to operate.

Exactly there are ways to save. 50% off Tuesdays and Wednesday for any format so I don’t get the complaining about prices.
If you don’t like the price, go on Tuesday and Wednesday (if you’re an AMC Stubs member, free tier).

Sure, this saves a small amount of money during the very specifc times of the year when the kids are out of school. Still costs my family of 5 over $100.

AMC concession prices are out of hand, we went several months ago and I remember having to buy an extra large Coke and extra large popcorn, the one here by my house only sells one size.
Now they tout “free refills” and the soda machine is self-serve, but I was not excited about paying $8 for a Coke and $15 for a tub of popcorn.

50% is a small amount of money? That’s like 1990’s prices. What does the time of year have to do with anything?
If you’re claiming you can’t go because of school, tickets are again 20% off for matinees on the weekend. Prices are not the problem

Well, prices aren't the only problem. There is also the problem that there are hardly ever movies worth watching. But yes, prices are a huge problem.
ETA: Also, I don't know what they're doing at your AMC, but it's only 20% off for the matinee here, even on Tuesdays. Still overpriced even at that price point.
