Variety reports that Warner Bros. and The Tolkein estate have been quietly shopping around a television series based on J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings book series and after interest from multiple parties Amazon has emerged as the front runner for the series’ home. The outlet notes that no deal has been set and that talks are still early; however, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is reportedly “personally involved in the negotiations” for the series.

I don’t see how this doesn’t have disappointment with a touch of resentment attached to it.
The film series was just too good, and while the backstory is deep as hell I don’t know if there are stories there that the general public cares about.

"Backstory" could mean fleshing out stories from The Silmarillion, which is an absolute treasure trove of fantasy. There are multiple tales in that collection that, if they were expanded, would have been more epic and grander than Lord of the Rings. You could do a series on just Numenor that could run as long as Game of Thrones. You could attempt to take on the First Age tales and do the same.

The bigger problem is the Tolkien Estate; my understanding is that they were very displeased and disappointed with the way Jackson treated The Hobbit. It wasn't written as an action fantasy, it was more of an adventure tale.
Maybe the combination of new money, and a promise to treat tales as they were written (and there definitely are lots of action tales in the Silmarillion) will change minds.

Christopher Tolkien hated the LOTR movies and vowed never to work with Hollywood again. They had already sold the film rights to The Hobbit by then. This series would have to be something already sold like LOTR or maybe something original like a Shadow of Mordor adaptation.

Lol frick him. Those films were really good and well deserving of the Oscars they won! The Hobbit films were a mixed bunch. I liked the second one a lot but the third was very mediocre and you can tell now stretched thin it was and I think Jackson just wanted to be done with it.

That sounds crazy expensive.

Amazon has the money...plus it's not a huge risk with the built in fan hood for Tolkien stuff.
Bet it will have comparable budget to Game of Thrones.
Would be the perfect forum for The Silmarillion

This could either fantastic or a huge let down.
A series could really flesh out a lot of the detail from the books that are too difficult to fit into a movie with time constraints. Even though the movies are long as hell, there was a crap ton of material left out.
Not all of the material from the Silmarillion would make for good TV. At the very least I'd at least like to see a Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin, and even some sort of Sauron/Numenor/last alliance film adaptation one day.

Looks like it. Interesting how they are wanting to move away from the niche stuff to more blockbuster properties that can sell overseas.
Smart.

You see, thats my point.
The general public has a certain idea of what LOTR is.
So you either do something different that leaves a bad taste in a lot of mouths, or you end up with something that at best feels like a retread.

Amazon is throwing cash around like a drunken sailor.

Amazon has closed a massive deal — said to be close to $250 million — to acquire global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The streaming service has given a multi-season commitment to a LOTR series in the pact, which also includes a potential spinoff series.
quote:
Amazon, Netflix and HBO had been approached by the Tolkien estate, who had been shopping the project. It came with an upfront rights payment said to be in the $200 million-$250 million range, and I hear Amazon landed the rights by paying close to $250 million. That is just for the rights, before any costs for development, talent and production, in proposition whose finances industry observers called “insane.” It is a payment that is made sight unseen as there is no concept, and there are no creative auspices attached to the possible series. On top of that, the budget for a fantasy series of that magnitude is likely to be $100 million-$150 million a season.
quote:
Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

That just seems crazy to try to outdo one of the best movie trilogies ever.
They could have picked from a bunch of fantasy series that haven't been touched and made them pretty epic with that budget.

The entire trilogy cost about $300 million to produce, now Amazon is paying $250 million for the rights alone. They must be prepared to get some good cgi and maybe a few big name actors.
Posted on 11/13/17 at 4:59 pm to Brosef Stalin
CGI will probably still not look as good as the mostly practical effects from jackson’s Trilogy. Even with that budget
Posted on 11/13/17 at 9:11 pm to abellsujr
I'd almost rather have a new trilogy, IF done right ala the LOTR trilogy. That's a big IF, and a bigger almost. I'm happy with LOTR by itself.

Come on Silmarillion. I know that isn't what the above means but a man can dream.

They are supposed to bring out an ad supported version of Amazon Prime Video. They already had the Whole Foods crowd pretty locked up, they don't have as much traction on the WalMart end of the economy. What better way to get to those people than a "must have" Amazon branded free video streaming app?
