I'm watching the episode right now. It's going to be a tough location. Biko has a colorful personality. Clay looks like a serious hunter/gatherer. With Rose I'm not sure she will make it to the end of this first episode.

Update Ep1: Tim started strong but he crashed hard. His shelter looked great. One down nine to go.

The woman that came in second on Season 7 was pretty damn impressive.

Agreed, I think if she were on an earlier season she might have won but Roland was just cruising.

This season premier was strong!

Got our 1st forged knife.
Got our 1st functional fishing pole.
Got our 1st heart attack.

There is so much more readily available food to hunt & forage in this location. Will be interesting to see who can collect the most before winter sets in.

As soon as Tim cried when he got dropped off, I told my fam that bitch is done. Then I saw he actually had a massive heart attack a few years before. Then I said that weak hearted bitch had no chance. He took the place of somebody more worthy of the spot.

35% heart capacity left? WTF were producers thinking letting him on this show?

I think the show knew he'd be gone early. They like a few people to be taken out early so people see the challenge as even tougher. That fishing pole that guy made was fricking awesome. Also that dude is fricking nuts that ran at that mountain lion without his bow.

I doubt he could get his bow up and drawn in time if that cat pulled a 180. You could tell that cat never saw a human before. Was curious and scared of him

Edit....I'm curious if a woman will ever win the show.

The last few seasons there have been several women who were badasses.

They key to a woman winning isn't going to be their survival skills as much as finding the right weight/condition/etc. to be in to enter the challenge. A lot of the outdoor/survivalist type women have been in pretty good shape at the start, which in a lot of ways works against them.

One of them is going to need to pack on like 30 to 50 extra pounds and still keep their conditioning up going in to the challenge to be able to make it.

I re-watched the episode this morning. Way too many distractions to enjoy the episode last night.

Here's my first thoughts on the contestants:

Tim: We know what happened to him. The opening segment sort of led you to his early departure. My guess is he over exerted himself with the shelter not taking his heart into consideration and he paid for it. His shelter was really impressive.

Matt: It's hard to take a "man-bun" seriously...LOL. He has the skills but strikes me that this is more of a holistic journey than winning. The dude's running around bare foot. I can't see him going the distance if he is as "silly" as he's being portrayed.

Biko: I like him. Good personality. He seems content to be alone to his own thoughts. I like his shelter construction. Having a pregnant wife can be his Achilles heel. If he gets to missing her and that event could take him out. He's got plenty of weight to burn energy from. Loved him making a forge to smith a spike into a blade. He's a real contender.

Rose: She's pretty hardcore. The "sweet voice" is a little deceiving. Her skillset for this event is solid. She's fit and has the extra weight to lose. She needs to be careful with plant eating because it looks like the berries she ate messed her up. I like her shelter plans.

Clay: Easily the strongest of the lot. Strong skill set. No apparent fear of the animals. Doesn't seem to have problems with gathering food. It's been hinted that he's worried about the isolation from his family and we've seen that take many players out.

Very strong first episode.

NOTE:

One thing about Tim. He said he didn't have food for 3 days. Well, in his 10 items, he took food rations:

So, he either ate what he had in day or two or he was foolish and didn't eat the rations while throwing everything at shelter building.

I was a bit harsh calling that dude a bitch but he should not have been allowed to go out there with that significant heart condition.

But overall the episode was great.

I know the guy had a heart attack but I have my suspicions about the 35% heart capacity. The guy that ran up on a mountain lion after it ran off would have felt stupid if it would have challenged him, by yourself with no dogs could have ended badly for him. Right now I’m rooting for the guy from the Virgin Islands but the no fire starter might do him in.

Clay is one bad arse survivor. Bags a bunch of edible mushrooms, kills a Grouss with his first arrow shot through brush, builds a nice Rod & reel, catches a nice trout, builds an initial shelter and storms straight at a mountain lion trying to tree it all on the first show. Nice first show resume for Clay. If that mountain lion had turned on him, he had his bear spray.

We watched it as a family last night. Not buying what Tim was selling. He played it up for the cameras in our opinion.

Season 6 is my favorite. Season 7 winner would still be there if they didn’t pull him out. He has several screws loose.

Callie Russell lasted 89 days and would easily have made the 100 if not for frostbite on her toes. The medical staff compelled her to tap out. I don't know if she would have outlasted Roland, but she was every bit as capable of staying out there for another 3 months as he was.

This video was my split second initial thought when Clay charged at the Mountain Lion. Then after hearing him explain what he was doing and knowing he had bear spray I realized he is going to thrive on this show.

How has it taken 8 seasons for this? Very well done on his part. I’ve always wondered why people haven’t tried if.

Clay needs to give the instructions for that. I would show that to my Boy Scout Troop.

If the fishing pole was so great, he would have kept reeling the fish all the way in instead of abandoning the pole and just hand pulling the fish in.
Still cool that he built it.
