one of the biggest themes of the show is that bad things tend to happen when rulers don't listen to their advisors, or are given poor counsel. Stannis is wise to heed Davos, as he has yet to steer him wrong. And he's wise to heed Mel, because she is a servant of the deity that has been proven to exist.
Davos almost ended Stannis arc with his advice to leave Melisandre and not take her to the Battle of Blacwater Bay. Melisanndre's visions of John Snow, Snow, Stannis, TPWP, Azor are getting a little jumbled. Not sure how her advice for him to go after Ramsey will turn out.

There's a difference between hearing them out and doing whatever the frick they want him to do
He doesn't do everything they say. Hell, he had Davos thrown in a cell for going against his orders which directly countered Davos' advice.
Stannis definitely grows on you in the books. He is the guy you want leading even if he'll never be the guy you want to drink a beer with.

....because of the red lady which supersedes Davos

Except for Blackwater Bay

Pretty much
The reason he ships Gendry off is because he knows he will eventually fold to the Red Lady who wants to sacrifice him because Stannis has no will power

Gendry is the oldest though
Mya Stone is older and a recognized bastard, born prior to his marriage with Cersi.

Edric Storm is the recognized bastard

This.
Stannis arriving to save the Wall is a much bigger deal in the books IMO. The moment I read that part was the moment I realized Stannis and his advisors are the only group in Westeros that have their priorities straight and actually see the big picture of the danger the Kingdom is facing.

this won me over to Stannis The Motherfricking Mannis
quote:
"Lord Seaworth is a man of humble birth, but he reminded me of my duty, when all I could think of was my rights. I had the cart before the horse, Davos said. I was trying to win the throne to save the kingdom, when I should have been trying to save the kingdom to win the throne."

My favorite line for him actually came from the show.
"Hundreds will die."
"Thousands"
What...a...badass
His men really did have to pick him up and carry him off the battlements because he would have taken King's Landing single-handedly had they not done so.

"I defeated your uncle Victarion and his Iron Fleet off Fair Isle, the first time your father crowned himself. I held Storm's End against the power of the Reach for a year, and took Dragonstone from the Targaryens. I smashed Mance Rayder at the Wall, though he had twenty times my numbers. Tell me, turncloak, what battles has the Bastard of Bolton ever won that I should fear him?"
such a sick quotation
that one &
“We all know what my brother would do. Robert would gallop up to the gates of Winterfell alone, break them with his warhammer, and ride through the rubble to slay Roose Bolton with his left hand and the Bastard with his right.” Stannis rose to his feet. “I am not Robert. But we will march, and we will free Winterfell … or die in the attempt.

I hate what they've done to Stannis the Motherfricking Mannis in the show. He is epically great in the books.

the OP definitely needs a spoiler warning in the title
