I disagree with those of you saying Aliens is just a really good action movie. it's so much more than that to me. it's super dark, creepy, and atmospheric - and you can feel the impending doom and increasing panic and claustrophobia as the Marines are picked off one by one, and the group is channeled into smaller and smaller spaces. you've got the vaguely sinister story behind whatever happened at Hadley's Hope. you've got creepy arse Bishop, who you arent really sure about until the very end.

Yea I agree with your take. It does have way more action than Alien but there is horror and suspense aspects to it as well. The fact that all of the actions scenes (except the dropship crash) take place in confined spaces like the hive, medlab/operations, the ship dock add to the suspense and tension even when all hell is breaking loose. Its a remarkable film and the extended cut adds even more emotional depth to it.

Every element was better in Alien instead of the special effects. Obviously so many years later it should be better on those.
Story, suspense, pace, acting, and energy were way better in first one.

I rarely have rewatched Alien. But I've frequently rewatched Aliens in the past if it was on TV on a Saturday.
So that's my litmus test.
Alien is the Sci-Fi, Aliens is the Vietnam war movie set in space.
The movies are impossible to compare but it's easier to rewatch Aliens.

Me too. i didnt intend to say it was only an action movie. it is more than just that. its a great film though and through. Alien/Aliens is right there at the top of my movie list.
it however, simply does not have the same importance that Alien has to cinema.

Both are fantastic movies, and I'll agree with others who said Alien is the superior movie, but Aliens has better rewatchability due to the action/popcorn movie aspect.
The deleted scene in Alien with Brett being transformed into an egg would've made for an intriguing follow up too.

Literally the second movie I saw in the theater.
My Dad had seen it and said it was the scariest movie ever. We went to see some animated film but ended up with Alien.
Halfway through the movie, my 4-year old sister says 'Daddy, when does it get scary?". It's a slow burn.
Probably the better film but the last 10 minutes of Aliens is...the most intense, gripping scenes in movies.
Still Alien has the best trailer ever.

Very tough one because they're both such great movies but I'd have to go with Alien. I always loved the idea of the derelict crashed ship with the eggs as cargo not having any idea where it came from or what was its purpose. Until Prometheus of course..

Right, but now we know who (or what) was piloting the ship. Prometheus definitely took some of the mystique out of it.

Alien is a more suspenseful wtf movie. It is great. Aliens is more of an 89s action movie.
