Rewatched both films this past week and wanted the board’s opinion on which was the better movie. Is there a right or wrong answer?

It's Alien, and by a fricking TON.

I love Aliens, and it's great. But it is pretty overrated IMO, at least in terms of the Alien franchise. It's just a completely different movie (different genre altogether).

Cameron made a very competent, very good sequel to one of the best horror movies of all time. And while it holds up well on its own, it pales in comparison to the original.

IMO at least.

I don't think there is a wrong answer.

I like Aliens more because I tend to like 80s action over suspense/horror.

Alien is the better technical movie and on a first viewing it is outstanding. But I personally can't really get into alien on repeat viewings while Aliens is a great popcorn movie every time. Alien has better side characters and a tighter script and some legitimately creepy scenes that stick with you.

So it depends. I think both are great movies but they are so different in tone and style that it is fine if someone likes one better than the other.

I do agree that while Alien is the far better film, Aliens is more rewatchable. Which makes sense I guess, since it's the more "action/popcorn" movie like you said.

Aliens is also more quotable, which mostly helps. Mostly.

Great Sci-fi horror followed by a very good sci-fi action sequel.

Yep. Two very different movies. One is a space horror movie and the other is a classic '80s action/adventure. I would say it depends on your mood since they are both exceptional at what they do.

No wrong answer here. Just depends on your preference for the style. Alien is more horror, aliens is more action

Just like Terminator and T2. I think I prefer the sequel for both franchises.

Both movies are fantastic while being completely different.

I personally prefer Aliens because I like the SciFi-Action Space Marine thing.

Hard to compare a suspense/horror film to an action film. Apples to oranges.

I go with the original.

Aliens > Alien
Don't really care too much for the original.

People try to trash aliens for just being a dumb action movie but Alien is just a slasher movie in space. Done very well yes, but Aliens is done better and is more unique imo versus Alien

I can watch Halloween and get pretty much the same thing as Alien minus the spaceship and dinner table scene. Can't watch an action movie and get the same thing as aliens. Thus in my book the second film is better

its like comparing apples to oranges.

both are great. Personally i think Alien is the superior movie though. its a genre defining movie. At the end of the day Aliens is just a really great action movie.

Yeah they are different, I guess I was wondering which one people liked better in general more than trying to compare them against each other. I like Alien better but agree that Aliens is more fun to rewatch.

They are both phenomenal but they are different movie genres.

Personally, I go with Alien. The impact it had on Sci-Fi and Horror can't be understated. And it delivered one of the most shocking and horrifying scenes in movie history with the original chestburster.

I love and adore both as they were both instrumental in my love for movies at a young adolescence. As a teen/young adult the answer for me would be Aliens. However I truly believe that Alien is the superior film. It was the perfect combination of peak Ridley Scott's grandiose filmmaking combined with H.R. Giger's incredible set design & creature design, along with Dan O'Bannon's simple yet totally effective screenplay.

Also shoutout to Ron Cobb who designed the Nostromo and all of the human-made space designs. Gets looked over because of Giger's show stealing effects.
