the terms "underrated" and "overrated" really are meaningless without some context or frame of reference.

That said, Pacino is an amazingly gifted actor, both on screen and on stage. His more volatile performances are consciously chosen for the specific script and character. Not everyone will agree with the choice.

The " Gimme all you got" scene in "Heat" worked for that character at that point in the script...

Then he turned into a caricature of himself. Same with deNiro but in different career arc.

Nope, they're just very distinctive and recognizable individuals. DeNiro has done some remarkably varied work. See, for example, "Sleepers" and " This Boy's Life"

Method Actor to the extreme.

(channeling the "character" you "play" and allowing its "essence" to flow into you)

Serious Question:

Is this "acting"? Or, allowing a spirit to possess you?

The process is spooky. That might help explain Pacino's typical "overreaction". He IS The Character/Role.

A bit understated don’t you think?

Yeah yeah, Burrow did fine in 2019

Did it though? I busted out laughing and there was really no reason to laugh in that scene. Pacino has said that in an earlier version of the script Vincent had a coke habit, so that's the reason for his bombastic outbursts...were his 27 other characters who were the same guy on cocaine too? In one scene he's having a serious conversation with his wife about not being home. He says something like "you knew the deal when you married me babyyyyyyyyyyyy", it was the stupidest random quirk and again I busted out laughing. It just looks like an example of if you don't reign in Pacino he'll end up looking more like Ace Ventura Pet Detective than an LAPD detective

He's accurately rated. Had some legendary performances, but I don't think he's really been hyped since maybe Scent of a Woman. He's done plenty of low key performances with a lot of range too, and seems fairly down to earth the few times I've seen him interviewed.

Way overrated. Yelling is not always depth of character.

Al Pacino had one of the greatest runs in history in my opinion for about 30 years. Godfather movies, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, And Justice for All, Scarface, Glengarry Glen Ross, Scent of a Women. Pretty much any movie he was in I saw him in was great.

Sure he's old as frick and isn't what he used to be, but with some of the roles and movies he's been in, he's still one of my favorites. Same with De Niro.

Thought Pacino was good in The Irishman, House of Gucci, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood recently.

I was standing in line to buy a ticket for Donnie Brasco...and this old guy in front of me with his wife walked up to the ticket counter and just said to the teller..."Pacino."

And she simply gave him tickets for Donnie Brasco.
