He wasn't the best BECAUSE he was all of those things. Think of it as he's mike vick and brees is leo. vick is clearly more athletic but brees just has the intangibles that make him better.

for the record, this thread was meant to have only 2 source materials, the 2 live action movies from the 80s/90s

Just to point out..........Raph was like BJ Penn........he could fight with the best of em but when someone with similar skill worked him his anger got him beat.........For example, think about when Casey Jones knocked his arse into the trash can and put him to sleep....
Leo was more like a Randy Couture...........had excellent skills but you always knew there was someone more talented than him.
Dontello is more like Anderson Silva, a true champion who can still get his arse beat but because of brains wins by default.

I loved me some Turtles growing up. I was always under the assumption that Mike and Don were the better fighters.
Yes, Ralph and Leo got into pissing contest over who was the best but I think it was the ones that didn't have to prove it who would own. I mean, Mike would just laugh at people while he used his surroundings to eliminate his enemies. Distraction is also a part of fighting and Mike had that going well for him with his antics.
So, to go against the norm I say Michelangelo IS the best fighter

Agreed. It was all a game to him, and that care-free attitude allowed him to excel. He wasn't burdened with rage, leadership, or the need to show his intelligence. He just goofed off and kicked arse.

The late 80s-early 90s cartoon is the source material for the movies, so that should be the real material for this discussion.
And if my memory serves me correctly, Donatello did very well in the cartoon. He wasn't always the focus of the fights, but when they needed a group cleared out, just like in the video games he could create havoc with a swing of his bo.
I would say:
Beating up bad guys/clearing out foot soldiers in number: Donatello and Leo are first tier with Raph and Mikie behind them.
Ninja turtle battle royal: Leonardo, and then a tie amongst the rest for second.

I never read the comics, but I understand they were a little darker (and not just black and white)

Awesome thread SFP. I was just telling my girl the other day how much i loved the first two movies and need to get them for our collection. She looked at me like I was crazy, she just dont understand
I agree with you, donatello was the weakest to me. And it was for all my friends as well, only in the arcade game was he good and that was because his weapon has that long reach. After Leo ill say Raph.

That's what I'm saying as well. If you use the source material angle, there's no question Raph would wipe the floor with all of them.

one way to look at it is, the two turtles with the shortest weapons were able to survive in ninja fights then they must be the best. Raph and Mike were used hand speed instead of reach. If the turtles were forced to fight in a phone booth, then those two win hands down.

Ralph was the better fighter but he could never lead. My personal fav was Leonardo. He was a leader, level headed, and no slouch in a fight. Michelangelo just never really stood out to me. Donatello could fight but Leo and Ralph would whip his arse.

raph - badass that comes with baggage but talented enough where you learn to live with it
mike - "the glue guy" - does all the little things and is a huge part of the squad. wouldn't be a squad without him.
don - give me a break. felt sorry for the other three, not only did they have shells on their back, they had to carry donetellos sorry arse as well. seriously i never knew one person who wanted to be him

basically the turtles can be summed up just as the original power rangers:
leo = jason (red ranger)
undisputed leader
raph = tommy (green ranger)
bad arse fighter just doesnt have that leadership to be the best
mikey = black ranger
donatello = billy (blue ranger)
smarts gets him out of alot more tough spots than his fighting skills which equates him to a giant pussy
