Closest 70mm showing to me is 7 hrs away. Should I see it in Dolby Digital, or “Lie-max” IMAX?

Only these 30 venues are showing Oppenheimer in 70mm format.

Esquire IMAX – Sacramento, CA
Regal Hacienda Crossings & IMAX – Dublin, CA
AutoNation IMAX, Museum of Discovery & Science – Fort Lauderdale, FL
Regal Mall of Georgia & IMAX – Buford, GA
IMAX Theatre at Indiana State Museum – Indianapolis, IN
Chrysler IMAX Dome Theatre, Michigan Science Center – Detroit, MI
Celebration! Cinema Grand Rapids North & IMAX – Grand Rapids, MI
AMC Lincoln Square 13 & IMAX – New York, NY
Regal UA King of Prussia & IMAX – King of Prussia, PA

One of the most respected and successful directors of our time puts out a summer block buster thats not anchored to a dying IP and attempts to create a blockbuster without 200mm of CGI involved….this is basically Christmas for me

That’s where I’m going, but I had to buy the 2nd Friday afternoon because the weekends were booked for the good seats. Not sure how much has changed in the weeks since but your best bet would be a weekday. When I checked it was only playing for 2 weeks

The craziest thing about this video for me is learning that Cillian Murphy's name is pronounced "killian." That blew my mind. I've always said "sillian."

ETA: I posted this in the wrong thread. Oops.

Not an expert but have dived a bit into this leading up to the show, so take this with a grain of salt being my own understanding of the differences

Only about 30 theaters left that show true IMAX

Most use laser/digital IMAX

There’s about 200 locations that have the super large true IMAX screens, but most of these are also still digital. “Lie max” is the name given for these since they aren’t showing real 70mm film with the true original IMAX experience

Nolan filmed this movie entirely in 70mm and has pushed for people to see it in true IMAX/70mm if possible.

70mm has a very large aspect ratio which makes it perfect for IMAX screenings.

Your best bet would be 70mm Imax Film (very limited)

Or Digital Imax with Laser at the 1.43:1 ratio

I will say this... The imax dome at the shreveport sci-port might be a pretty good experience.

The only theater listed that is somewhat reasonably close to me is Nashville - about four hours away. I am hyped but don’t know that I am quite hyped enough to make the trek for a slightly better theater experience.

I have been to the Grand Ole Opry and have seen the theater on the same site. I bet it’s a nice one.

Nowadays I kind of opt for theaters with reclining seats.

I saw Dunkirk in Nashville. It was amazing.

I have family there and can make a weekend of it, but would depend on the timing.

It annoys me that the lie max theaters don't use reclining seats. I'm not going to a movie without them at this point, so Dolby o'neal lane it is

I have to wear glasses when I go to the theater, so wearing IMAX glasses over my regular glasses is kind of annoying as frick, especially for 3 hours (maybe it doesn't require glasses, the last IMAX movie I saw was Gravity) - I'll live with a regular showing

What was even the most recent one before this? Titanic?

If the movie itself turns out well, Oppenheimer will cement itself as a modern classic.

Wasn't this supposed to be Tenet before the pandemic?

Also Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was released in 70mm a few years ago (edit: was shown in 70mm but not filmed with it initially)

Certainly, and it didn’t really pan out but I’ll always root for those kind of movies

To be clear I don’t mean this in a “this will save the movies” sort of way. Just a rare sight to see in todays landscape and I hope it’s successful and leads to more similar type of swings
