They can be both good and bad.

An example which surprises me, even 25 years later, Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. He seems like such a no-nonsense guy, hence it's surprising that he'd take such a campy role in such a campy-ish film.

I was going to say Nicholas Cage but I couldn't figure out which role to begin with so I'll say Ghost Rider

I'll also add Jim Carrey with "The Truman Show"

Joaquin Phoenix - Joker. I didn't think he'd do it. I guess you can add Ledger as well. Nicholsons Joker was beloved. It was considered suicide to try and take on that role.

By who exactly? Seems like they got a big name actor each time they decided to use that IP so not sure where that comes from.

Was it though? Every actor who has taken on that role has either been an Oscar winner or an Oscar nominee.

Matthew Broderick playing Robert Gould Shaw in Glory, had only seen him in comedies then that role. He looked very close to the real Shaw and did ok in the role.

Michael Keaton as Batman - dude was pretty much only known for being in comedies to that point.

RDJ as Tony Stark / Iron Man - last I knew of him prior to that was being in rehab. So glad he got clean and became one of the most memorable characters ever.

Robert Pattinson as Batman - Because I only knew him from those god awful Twilight movies.

Sure, nowadays. I'm talking before Nolan revived the batman world. Ledger himself said he only accepted because he saw batman begins and decided that he could do something different in this world. If it were more camp, he would've declined.

I mean, actors say this kind of shite when they get cast in the latest fast and furious movies

It's easy to look at it now as a role everyone wants. But before Nolan, Nicholsons performance was considered untouchable. It's pretty funny looking back on it now, because he's probably only better than Leto

Looking back, Robert DeNiro in Midnight Run was a strange choice. Don't think he'd done a comedy up until that point, but he absolutely destroys in that role.

I was more surprised he was in a Steven Seaagal movie. I mean, he went to Harvard.

Another really good one. Guy is considered the most talented actor in his generation.I blame him for other established, respected, actors doing comic book roles.

Marky Mark - The Happening.

Scratch that...surprised a studio even took the role to release that garbage.

Bill Murray in The Razor's Edge

Even more surprised when I learned later than he only agreed to do Ghostbusters if the studio would finance him to make The Razor's Edge

Really good movie BTW

ETA:

Robin Williams in One Hour Photo

Robert De Niro as a cross dressing pirate in Stardust

Sean Connery in Zardoz
