A Star is Born - it's kind of hard to have any sympathy for Jack

Just recently saw this movie. I thought it was pretty good. Gaga did a good job and the music wasn't bad And Sam Elliot always does excellent work.

I just found it hard to work up any sympathy for Jack. Part of it was that Bradley Cooper didn't really stand out in the role to me. The bigger part, however, was that the guy was just so far gone that I didn't really find anything about him to relate to. Sure, he had a really bad childhood, and he did act decently once in awhile.

Overall, though, they just wrote it like the guy had packed it in before the movie even started. Made it difficult to garner any investment in his story.

The impression I got was he was already forgone, but found new life and motivation for it in helping Gaga’s character. Once she sort of shifted on her own and began straying to her own thing, he reverted back to no hope eventually ending it all.

I wasn’t as big of a fan as others were. I’ve always struggled with someone who self destructs and having sympathy for alcoholic types so didn’t really relate. I went into the movie having heard great reviews but didn’t really know what it was about. I thought it was entertaining but didn’t leave with any overwhelming feeling.

My problem is that they framed Jack's criticism of Gaga as unfair and then she had no redemption arc.

She was a terrible sell out with no integrity. frick, her "redemption" was using her husband's death for public attention.

I thought Bradley Cooper did a really nice Kris Kristofferson impersonation.

Good point. Heck, they could have even gone a bit more subtle with at least bringing up a suspicion or doubt that when she sang for him in the Supermarket parking lot at the beginning, she was really angling to be "discovered" by someone with major connections in the business.

One part I did find really powerful was the fight when she was in the bath where she makes a crack about his dad and he calls her ugly. Both were really gloves off type of things to say given his problems surrounding his dad and her, shall we say, "unconventional" beauty.

His depression and suicidal thoughts are relatable for a lot of people out there.

I can understand that. I just wish they had put in a little more positive traits with him so that his fall meant a bit more to me. I dunno, maybe it was the performance. Something didn't click with the character for me.

Only thing I'm going to say about this movie is I keep calling it the lady gaga documentary and it pisses my wife off.

Only time I liked him at all was when he nailed that “Pretty Woman” riff.

i saw a lot of positive traits from him, however flawed he was. rolled with the punches at the drag bar, legitimately liked Gaga's character for herself and not her as a vehicle, treated everybody but his sister pretty kindly, etc.

hell even though suicide is incredibly selfish, you're left thinking he did it so that he wouldn't stop her career or embarass her any more.

not encouraging that at all, but it was relatable to people who went through depression or alcoholism.

The first part I agree with, the end that I quoted I didn't take it like that at all. He was truly in love with her. He ended it because he saw he was in her way, it was self sacrifice. His death was the "birth of a star" IMO.

It's really weird for me seeing Lady Gaga do something where she acts like a completely normal person. She's a weird mother fricker, but I like her.

I thought this movie was actually really good too.

It's an act. An image she portrays to sell records.

I took it that his love for her was his redemption arc, he was already gone when he met her and she gave him a reason to hope. When he fricked that up, he cashed out.

I thought the last song she sang was the beginning of her redemption arc. Like isn't that last moment when the star is actually born? Before she was a talented sell out

Was she a sell out though? Maybe she was just happy performing and didn’t really have to be a rock style singer. She didn’t seem too conflicted by the record company guy’s suggestions. She just did it.

I’m sure she was a sell out to Cooper’s character.
