They are definitely going to have to get into that a bit.

Does anyone think that while the world of the books gets wider and more expansive, the TV series will stray a bit and stay more claustrophobic?

What I mean is, they can't possibly focus on all the ancillary characters and keep expanding the universe, to the point where in say, Season 4, Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Arya etc are barely in it, can they?

I know that is getting WAY ahead of ourselves, but I've been thinking about it. Personally, IF it gets that far, I think they are going to combine most of 4&5, eliminate a lot of Dorne scenes, Brienne scenes, etc, and focus on established Characters like Bran, Arya, Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Jaime, Cersei, etc. They are going to give main characters the secondary character's lines or experiences and start compressing scenes, combining battles, etc. Its the only way I could see it working.

I definitely think they will recombine the chapters from Feast and Dance so that they flow in the correct timeline should the show go that far. Hopefully by that time we have Winds of Winter in our hands (or it's close to being finished) so Martin can tell the directors what are the really important developments and which ones can be easily lost.

guess it'll depend on how well they build the new characters/storylines into the existing story. ASOS will definitely be split into 2 seasons or be almost double the current length of 10 episodes. AFFC and ADWD will have to be interwoven and maybe made into 1.5 or 2 seasons. Maybe we'll see the producers do what GRRM said would be extremely difficult and map out one large timeline and go by that over sticking to 1 book = 1 season. You have several events overlapping in the overall timeline despite being in separate books

I doubt it. This show is expensive enough. I don't think HBO is going to do anything that will make it last MORE seasons. I think they will push to condense.

At best, aSoS will get an extra 2-4 episodes.

I do think HBO will go from 10 to 12 episodes starting next year. I would love to get more than that for aSoS, but I don't think we will get it.

They need to be closer to 20 than 10 unless they plan on butchering the best book in the series. The producers have at least mentioned the possibility of two seasons for ASOS

Book speculation:

What are the chances somebody like Doran Martell or Illyrio in the Free Cities produces a 15/16 year old who they claim is Prince Aegon. The only surviving child of Prince Rhaegar and Princess Elia.

Who was sent from Kings Landing with a trusted lady in waiting by Elia after hearing about Rheagar's death. The baby was replaced by a servant's baby.

When Clegane killed the baby, he smashed it's head into a wall, so a positive id would be impossible.

They could claim that they are bringing Aegon now because the realm is strife with war and rebellion and it needs a strong leader.

I think thats certainly possible.

SPOILER FOR BOOK 5 FROM A SAMPLE CHAPTER:

There's a character named Young Griff that is mentioned in passing in a Tyrion chapter that has people on westeros all in a tizzy. I don't think there's any significance, but we'll see I guess.

Benioff also said that if they're lucky enough to get renewed, the first few seasons would "roughly map onto the books." But given that the third book is so much longer than the first two, they might have to break it up somehow. "This would be a great problem to have," joked Benioff.

they've already spent millions on set designs that will be re-used; costs that w/ more seasons will be spread out over the life of the series.

SPOILER FOR BOOK 5 FROM A SAMPLE CHAPTER:

I'm guessing that Young Grif is going to turn out to be the mummer's dragon that Dany saw in her vision in the House of the Undying. Connington just found a silver-haired orphan and raised him to think he was Aegon. (The Valyrian silver hair seems to be commonplace in the Free Cities.) GRRM can't just keep playing the baby swap card.

I think I might've posted this earlier in the thread but I drink so who knows.

SPOILERS:

My wife is about to be pissed when Ned dies.

She told me he was her favorite character, and if he dies, she'll quit watching. I told her not to worry about it.

Couple of questions. I have read through CoK, about to start on aSoS when I get back from vacation.

1. What is a warg?

2. So Jon and Bran can live in their direwolves during dreams? I don't get this part.

3. Completely misunderstanding the parts with Melisandre. So she is a sorceress and killed Renly/guy who was in control of storm's end?

4. The Dany chapters dont make any sense to me, especially when she goes into some cave and sees the future. I read the summaries and stuff on tower of the hand but still dont understand any of it.

Anyways, were some of yall as lost as I was when reading the book? I have finished clash of kings, gone back and read all the chapter summaries on tower of the hand, and I still feel like I am lost on a lot of shite.

Gonna start aSoS on Monday. Can't wait! I heard it is the best one

warg is someone who can basically control/see through other living things like Jon and Bran. They have a special connection w/ their direwolves; all the stark kids do to differing degrees.

yes, through black magic she sent the shadow babies

assume you're talking ab the House of the Undying w/ the warlocks etc. Basically she saw possible prophetic visions of the future but it was also an attempt to kill her, if I remember right. Haven't read ACOK in a few yrs and the whole thing was really trippy

def didn't pick up on everything the first read; there's a ton of foreshadowing and symbolism that's hard to pick up on unless you're completely familiar w/ everything that's going on, which i'm sure was intentional to leave the reader feeling as unsure as the characters. And you haven't seen shite yet til you've finished ASOS

thanks for the clarification. i am flipping through danys chapter in the house of the undying and it is so awesome yet so confusing!

My favorite part of the books so far is definitely Jon Snow and the Wall. Something about the North and the "mystery" is really fascinating to me.

Also, if it can be said without a major spoiler, what does "A song of ice and fire" actually mean?
