Aired Monday night and I DVRd it on YoutubeTV. Fantastic doc. It covers every aspect of the music over the 50 years including great musical guests, awful musical guests, digital shorts, song parodies etc. Lot of great behind-the-scenes access from Sandler, to Lonely Island, Paul Simon, Timberlake, Mick Jagger, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Billie Eilish, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, just to name a few.

It's amazing how many artists SNL made. For example, Adelle was a nobody in the US until she first appeared in 2008. Her single shot up to number 1 the next day, putting her on the global map.

There is a great story about Rage Against the Machine fighting with the stage crew in the seconds before they went on air due to placing an upside down American flag on their amps, then getting locked down by secret service in the hall after trying to take it out on Steve Forbes (then presidential candidate) who happened to be hosting.

The also dive into some of the more controversial performances including Sinéad O'Connor's ripping a photo of the Pope, and Ashley Simpon's walking off the air, complete with the control room's audio during the debacle. Kanye West went rogue twice live.

Tons more stories. I enjoyed every minute of it.

No surprise there from a band of rich commie douchebags.

Meh

Aside from Elvis Costello in '77, the Stones in '78 and the few times Tom Petty was on, it's been very forgetful.

Is it available anywhere other than YTTV? I've been on a documentary kick lately and this sounds interesting and I'd like to check it out.

Morello is such a tool and came off as one...but the bassist was going to go beat up steve forbes because SNL censored him? Seems reasonable

Well if anything, RAtM has always been known for being super reasonable.

Dude always seemed like a massive prick. I remember he climbed up on the scaffolding or lights or some part of the set while limp bizkit were receiving an award on mtv that beat out sleep now in the fire.

And don’t get me wrong. Of all those metal rap bands I think RATM was BY FAR the best. But you’re moonlighting as this anti capitalist, counter culture band who then throws a bitch fit about an MTV award.

RAtM now supports the "Machine." They should change the song lyrics to "frick Yeah I'll do what you tell me!

Just finished. Awesome documentary. Should get all the Emmys just for the 5 minute musical montage (if that's the right word) at the beginning. Can't imagine how they melded all those acts and songs together.

Was gonna say the first 7 minutes alone were so damn good. Whole doc was great but damn did it kill straight out the gate with that montage

Metallica was mentioned once for two seconds. What a joke.

If your brain got deep-fried watching the marvelous opening sequence to 50 Years of SNL Music, yes, it was a very intensive labor of love for Questlove, and the Emmys committee should already have a verdict. Speaking with Deadline about the method behind his creative madness, the director said that the seven-minute mash-up — which deftly remixed about a hundred SNL performances — took nearly a year to complete in the editing room.

Love Metallica but they covered a whole damn lot of territory in the given time. Plus they seemed to mostly focus on acts that had some extra degree of relevance.

I love how they covered the comedy music aspects too. Was laughing out loud at the Samberg shorts.

Great show, but not one mention or image of Leon Redbone, who was a staple of the first few seasons.

Speaking of, does this doc show the time Beastie Boys start playing Sabotage, then Elvis Costello runs out and they launch into Radio Radio?
