It’s the first time I remember seeing him. How much of his acting career does he owe to this role on Haply Gilmore?

Probably more to his father

He had already been in Reality Bites and The Ben Stiller Show before this.
His show is what really kicked him off.

Stiller also had been the star villain in Heavyweights.
He was a known commodity at this point, but wasn't yet a gigantic name like he would be after There's Something About Mary.

I had forgotten about Heavyweights. Great movie.

Stiller is a better villain than protagonist

quote:Being the son of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara had very little cache when Ben Stiller was working his way through bit parts in the 80's and early 90's. Jerry Stiller had just started as Frank Costanza (before Seinfeld was SEINFELD) when Ben got the Reality Bites gig. Jerry had been relegated to bit parts on TV series for the previous couple of decades.
Probably more to his father

The first thing I remember seeing Ben Stiller in was Next of Kin as the mobsters son.

He’s good at both but is an elite villain.
