Eh. You could probably write it in such a way where he comes from the parts of the expansive Roman Empire that reached into Africa. Hell most of the Roman church figures we know are from like Turkey or some shite

And this is coming from a dude that rails against anachronistic race swapping as ruthlessly as anyone on this board. Also….its fricking Denzel!

Was too young to see gladiator in theaters
Didn’t stop me [my parents].

I had just turned 11 when it came out. One of the coolest things I’ve seen in theaters, and will always be one of my favorite movies.

That's great, but the real Lucilla was killed by her brother Commodus when she was caught in a plot to assassinate him.

Yeah but they need a vehicle for the feminist theme. My guess is she's the center of the story and the hero. I'd be shocked if this wasn't about feminizing the original story.

Well, you are at least consistent.

Didn't realize they had black arms dealers in Rome

The Roman Empire was filled with folks of all colors. Their territory included most of Europe (including Britain), the northern shores of Africa as well as pretty far down the Nile, and the Middle East.

Denzel Washington’s Macrinus is an arms dealer who lives lavishly and keeps a stable of gladiators for sport.

I'm very confused by the timeline while looking at the character list.

Geta and Caracella are in it. Geta was emperor from 209-211 while Caracella was emperor from 198 - 217. There was an emperor named Macrinus who reigned from 217 - 218 - although I don't think they are trying to say Denzel's Macrinus is the emperor Macrinus. Then you have Lucius Verus who died in 169 - 20 years before Geta and Caracella were born. When is this set?

ETA: I'm dumb, Lucius Verus isn't the emperor by the same name it was his son.

I wouldn't try too hard to tie these movies to realistic timelines. They are fictional movies with a hint of non-fictional characters and character names. The timeline and events aren't going to match reality.

It was actually my mistake for mixing up the emperor Lucius Verus with his son of the same name.

You know what your map is missing? Black people. They shoe horned a black character in there but there very well could have been some type of black african that made his way to Rome. The story begins in Numidia so I was thinking Denzel would play a Numidian royal but they were not black.

I believe they actually were. The Romans explicitly mentioned they were black, which is why it’s absurd to say Cleopatra was black because that would have been mentioned. You’re not mistaking them for the Ptolemy line are you?

Numidians are the natives of Algiers and were Berbers. They may have been dark but they were not the sub-saharan black people that would look like Denzel. The people of northern Africa were not black. The Berbers.

The Numidians were brilliant horsemen and played an instrumental role in Hannibal's defeat to Scipio Africanus. There is an entire movement now that wants to establish northern Africans as black. They aren't/weren't.

It's uncommon for maps to show any people.

It's not uncommon for empires to trade with people outside of said empire. Rome's commerce with people outside of their own borders isn't a mystery.

I promise that none of us will be shocked when you confirm your preconceived notions regardless of, and likely in spite of, what is actually in the film.
