Yahoo - Why the narrative about declining NBA ratings is wrong

The NBA has been singled out for its ratings decline by critics and certain sects of the media, even though it isn’t the only league suffering a viewership decline.
“I think [the kneeling] has been horrible for basketball,” President Donald Trump said on Fox Sports Radio in August. “Look at the basketball ratings. They are down to a very low number. They have enough politics with guys like me. They don’t need more as they are going up for the shot. There was a nastiness about the NBA the way it was done, too. The NBA is in trouble. Big trouble. Bigger trouble than they understand.”
Yes, the NBA Finals are down 48 percent from last year, but there are a number of contributing factors. The ratings purge isn’t an isolated affair.
A number of observers have suggested that players speaking out on racial inequality during news conferences and kneeling for the national anthem, and the social justice messages on the back of the jerseys during the NBA’s restart have negatively affected the league’s brand and ratings.
quote:
According to Nielsen Media Research, the racial composition of the NBA’s audience for this year’s playoffs is the same as last year’s.
The audience for the 2020 NBA Finals through the first four games is 45 percent white and 55 percent non-white; it was 46 percent white, 54 percent non-white in 2019. This suggests that the people claiming to be turning off their televisions because of the social justice messaging aren’t the ones tuning in regularly in the first place.
So why is the NBA being targeted by political talking heads who are attempting to make the connection between social justice efforts and a TV ratings decline? It’s likely just that — politics — with race being an unfortunate touchstone in the discussion.
There are, however, numerous contributing factors as to why all major sports leagues are seeing a ratings drop.

I don't understand anyone who is that upset about the social justice messaging. I watched the entire game 4 of the playoffs and I don't remember them mentioning any racial stuff at all. I refuse to believe any actual NBA fan would stop watching because of it

I don’t think it’s the hardcore fans that have stopped watching. It’s the casuals who watch the nba just because it’s sports. They’re the ones being pushed away.

That’s what you have when conservatives use this site as their safe space to say whatever they want and are triggered at the thought of discussing racial issues.

It's all over the floor and on the jerseys even if they stopped harping on it every 20 minutes. The question you should be asking is why can't others be okay with people tuning out? What does it matter to you? Watch if you want to watch, we decided the entertainment isn't worth it to us. We'll do other things with that time we used to support black athletes.

because y'all don't shut up about it
any and every thread concerning the NBA or NFL, half the replies are from falling all over themselves to let you know that they don't watch the NFL or NBA anymore

Evidently both black and white folks- at least according to what’s posted in the op. If not his use of % don’t work.

almost like other issues are largely pushing the ratings drop across all professional sports

I guess so even in a pandemic when less activities are taking place so more time for butt sitting in front of the tv.

But, but, but... why can't you look past it? Why do you let it affect you so much? Not happy with reading it...TUNE OUT. Oh wait, you can't do that because it would make you a hypocrite, just like when you people are constantly bitch in the ratings threads. Stop falling over yourself to tell us you are still watching.

That's because it's written all over the court and their jerseys. It doesn't need to be said anymore.

It would be the equivalent to a Native American going to movies to watch a Western in which they are the vilians.
