Good article, but it's kind of eye opening compared to the violence here.
They talk about a gang war that lasted 17 years and 16 people died. 16 dead is a slow month in some similarly sized American cities

I live in Chicago and no way do I see the genocide stopping.
A detective told me the police in Chicago are way too scared to go into gang neighborhoods,because they are worried they will be recognized and get targeted.
Chicago has the same issue Oakland has. The streets are safer when you have 1 king pin running things, because of lack of turf wars. When you knock off the big king pin that = 1,000s of small gangs in Chicago trying to be the new Vice Lords.

Sadly, I think you're 100% right. Chicago is so remarkably violent these days because there is no strong, hierarchical gang leadership in place to keep petty disputes from boiling over. It's just a bunch of wild, young idiots doing whatever they want. I think the term is "gang fractionalization."

Wright Thompson is one of the most over-hyped, douchebag writers around. He's nothing but a gasbag Faulkner sycophant. His voice and his narration is pretty terrible and his pieces are pretty self-indulgent shite.
What many do not realize is that 25,000 words full of flowery language does not equate to actually getting your piece read...the true goal of a writer. It's like some antiquated parlor speak where all the "true" writers sit around and jerk each other off with their elitist "high brow" discussions.
Sorry for the soapbox, I just really hate Thomspon and writers of his ilk.
What many do not realize is that 25,000 words full of flowery language does not equate to actually getting your piece read...the true goal of a writer. It's like some antiquated parlor speak where all the "true" writers sit around and jerk each other off with their elitist "high brow" discussions.

The stories coming out of Chicago area hospitals are insane. It's literally like working a war zone. Also, there was a report last month that every year the city pays about $2.5 Billion for gunshot victims.
It should be noted that both Ireland and Chicago have very strong anti-gun laws.
I think, though it'll never happen, that the only way to curb the violence in Chicago is military intervention or just close off the roughest parts...quarantine the area.

Either I know you, or you really ought to meet a guy I work with. There was a discussion at the office Christmas party a few years ago about how much several people hated Wright Thompson. One guy did a withering impersonation.
I like a lot of the guy's stuff. But he plays the Southern writer card too much and I heard from some former co-workers and editors that he's a world-class douchebag.
