Would a 16 team NCAA tournament be just as effective as a 64 team tournament?

No. Because teams that are ranked lower than 4 make the final 4 almost every year.

Yes. I don't care about what Butler or VCU did.

The current format is fricking stupid. Like giving everyone in little league a trophy.

I like how they include no names like Norfolk State or Lehigh. Especially when they knock off premier teams. Adds to the excitement without even considering the depth it adds to bracket pools and all of that.

If you want to turn basketball into a sport where money rules all then yes.

Butler made the Finals two years in a row and they were outside of the Top 16 seeds. If anything more teams deserve to make it.

Last year, VCU played in one of the "play-in" games and made the final four

The reason they keep expanding is money.

Villanova was a #8 seed when they beat Georgetown and that was great seeing Georgetown lose.

ETA: And LSU would not have made the final 4 in 86 fwiw

Nova won as a #8 seed in '85. It doesn't happen often, but it is cool that lower seeds have a shot at the title.

ETA: damn, beat me to it.

good Lord, no...then what does the regular season even mean if you make it more teams than there already are?

anyone know how many "bubble" teams have ever won it all...i'd bet very few, if any. keep it at 68 max

The teams seeded 5-16 add to the excitement. They have little chance to win it all, but it gives TV ratings a boost.

Also, We still celebrate when LSU was the first #11 seed ever to make it to the final 4 in '86. We don't have a whole lot to celebrate when it comes to basketball...don't try to take that away too...

This. Basketball is definitely not my favorite college sport, but I love the tournament. They do it right.
